Who would buy this brand?? --Ed.

General Motors Corp. said Tuesday that it has signed a deal to sell its Hummer truck unit, just one day after filing for bankruptcy.

But GM (GM, Fortune 500) would not identify the buyer nor name a price, saying only that the deal would close by the end of September.

"I'm confident that Hummer will thrive globally under its new ownership," said Troy Clarke, president of GM North America, in a press release. "And for GM, this sale continues to accelerate the reinvention of GM into a leaner, more focused, and more cost-competitive automaker."

As part of the deal, some GM plants will continue to build the Hummer brand for the new owner, at least for a while. The company said its Shreveport, La. plant will keep building Hummers for the new owner until at least 2010.

It's a vehicle I never understood the purpose of. For the cost of one of these behemouths, I'd rather buy a real HMMV if I were going to do some serious off-roading. Most of these things are driven with city tires on them, and never see a drop of dirt in their lives. What's the point? My 13 year old Nissan pickup sees more dirt in a year than most of these things will see in a lifetime.

The hummer is the king of the fsps too. I don't know as I would dare take one off-roading into the places I go. I can take my Nissan out into the Maine woods, and still get 18 miles to the gallon (the EPA highway rating), and that's with 4x4. With that leviathan on wheels, I'd be afraid to, for fear of not making it back out on the gas in the tank. Not to mention getting stuck in the mud, since it's so heavy.

That's a REAL hummer!

If you're going to measure FE in gallons per mile, might as well get the real thing.
