This provides a suggested direction of future product development --Ed.

On June 1 2009, GM announced the closing of 14 U.S. manufacturing plants and three service/parts operations.

Assembly
Orion, Mich. - Standby Capacity - September 2009
Pontiac, Mich. - Close - October 2009
Spring Hill, Tenn. - Standby Capacity - November 2009
Wilmington, Del. - Close - July 2009

Stamping
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Close - June 2009 (previously announced)
Indianapolis, Ind. - Close - December 2011
Mansfield, Ohio - Close - June 2010
Pontiac, Mich. - Standby Capacity - December 2010

Powertrain
Livonia Engine, Mich. - Close - June 2010
Flint North Components, Mich. - Close - December 2010
Willow Run Site, Mich. - Close - December 2010
Parma Components, Ohio - Close - December 2010
Fredericksburg Components, Virg. - Close - December 2010
Massena Castings, N.Y.- Closed - May 1, 2009 (previously announced)

Service & Parts Operations (SPO) Warehousing & Parts Distribution Centers
Boston, Mass. - Close – December 31, 2009
Jacksonville, Fla. - Close – December 31, 2009
Columbus, Ohio - Close – December 31, 2009

And using the list from above, it is possible to see how the plant closings indicate the direction of product development:

Assembly
- Orion, Mich. - Pontiac G6 (and additional Malibu production as needed)
- Pontiac, Mich. - Silverado/Sierra pickups
- Spring Hill, Tenn. - Chevy Traverse (cousins Enclave/Acadia built in Lansing, MI)
- Wilmington, Del. - Solstice/Sky
(These closings appear to reflect the phase out of Pontiac and reduced demand for full size crossovers)
The Spring Hill, Orion, and Pontiac plants will be idled but can start up again if market demand dictates. Wilmington, Delaware was a likely candidate as it builds only Pontiac/Saturn vehicles.

Powertrain
- Livonia Engine, Mich. - Northstar V8 engine
- Flint North Components, Mich. - 3800 V6 engine
- Willow Run Site, Mich. - 4L80E/4T80E transmission
(This reflects the probable elimination of the FWD Cadillac, which uses the Northstar V8 and 4T80E powertrain, and the old 4L80E transmission used in the HD pickups is being phased out in favor of the new 6 speed automatics that are built in a different plant.)

A very sad day, but not unexpected... http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet?target=http://image.emerald.gm.com/gmnews/viewpressreldetail.do?domain=827&docid=54632

As much as I think that these closings were brought on by corporate/union leadership themselves, and as much as I with the federal government would stop throwing good money after bad, that is a sobering list.
