Arai's Motorcycle Crossover XD-3 comes in solid colors including White for $569.95, Aluminum Silver, Diamond White, Silver, Gray and Black Frost for $584.95 and Motard Silver and Black for $599.95.

The XD-3 graphic wraps list for between $100 and $130 more at $699.95.

Daytona, FL. -- Arai Helmets 2009 lineup now includes 11 different solid-color choices in its full-face line, nine solids in open-face (not counting its special Honda Gold Wing color-matched solids), 11 solids in the XD3 hybrid Crossover-Design model for adventure touring, dual sport, off-road, and street, and 5 in the VX-Pro3 dirt model.

Previously, you could get any solid-color in Black or White only. With marketing emphasis on more appealing graphic designs, the solids took a back seat. Ironically, plain Black and White helmets continued to outsell their more attractive graphics wrapped counterparts year after year and continue to do so to this day.

Arai stated they never truly de-emphasized solid colors however. The company’s renewed emphasis on solids over the past several years has resulted in a number of very popular new colors and color treatments whose sales Arai reports are really taking off this year.

“Maybe it’s the economy and the fact that solids cost less, maybe more Arai riders are turning to our solid colors simply because they prefer them, maybe it’s all – or none – of the above,” said Arai Americas’ Director of Operations, Brian Weston. “The fact remains that Arai’s 2009 sales success seems to be resting on the increased sales of its solids.”

Arai’s 2009 solid color line-up is a fairly robust group of choices: the muted, matte-type Silver, Grey, and Black Frost colors that look like a soft covering of frost; Aluminum Silver; Platinum Grey; very unique glass-infused colors called Diamond White, Diamond Blue, and Diamond Black that subtly reflect light like the facets of a diamond; and Racing Black. Arai’s open-face helmet models add Pearl Glacier White, Pearl Twilight Silver, Silver, and Candy Spectra Red. And there are still the plain White and Black solids. The Crossover dual sport XD3 adds two more of its own: Motard Black and Motard Silver; and the pure off-road VX-Pro3 offers five different solids.

Could Arai’s solid-color helmet sales be influenced by the $80 to $130 savings vs. the full graphics units depending on model? In tough economic times, I do not believe we need to be brain surgeon’s to figure that one out for ourselves ;)

For another option to the renown Arai XD-3, consider the less expensive Shoei alternative as seen in the CleanMPG reviews the 2009 Shoei Hornet DS dual sport helmet (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=205584).

White helmets reduce accident rates for motorcyclists by 24 percent:

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/328/7444/0-b

They found that with reflective or fluorescent clothing the risk of a crash injury was reduced by 37%, with a white helmet by 24%, and with headlights by 27%.

The fact that most motorcyclists choose black helmets defies logic, to put it mildly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that making yourself more easily visible on a motorcycle helps prevent other motorists from failing to perceive you, and involving you in a wreck.

Arai offers "long oval" sizing in certain model lines, which happens to fit my head extremely well. I have a white Arai Signet GTR full-face helmet. I doubt that I could find a more comfortable helmet, and appreciate that Arai makes helmets for different shaped heads.
