DUI simply has to stop as this bike riders family lost a cherished dad to love :ccry:

Kathleen Boland, a drunk driver who struck and killed a motorcyclist in Milwaukee last summer during the Harley-Davidson 105th Anniversary Celebration, was sentenced on Monday to spend the next decade of her life in prison. Boland plead guilty in January to homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle in the death of motorcycle rider Michael Fleming of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Boland's blood alcohol level was estimated to be at .232 percent at the time of the accident. In addition to 10 years in prison, Boland must serve five years of extended supervision after her release.

"This is a tragic event that has brought together the biker communities of Ann Arbor Michigan and Milwaukee," noted Steve Johnson of ABATE of Wisconsin, a motorcycle rights and safety organization. "ABATE of Wisconsin set out to make sure the death of a visitor did not go unnoticed and that it did not get lost in the system."

"It is our hope that everyone enjoys a safe riding season in 2009 and that motorists share the road with motorcyclists," said Attorney Michael F. Hupy. "Preventing tragedies like this requires everyone on the road to be aware and take responsibility for their actions."

It is good to see someone pay for there foolishness!!! We need sniffers in cars to prevent them starting when drugs or alcohol is detected? So may die every day because of this problem. And I wonder how many of her friends let her drive. Hal

As bad as things are, it used to be far worse. There were far more drunks on the road in my younger days. Back then, it was wink and nod to drunks, and even police would give a drunk a ride home with no ticket or penalty of any kind.

I've been a supporter of MADD, donating on a regular basis, to support their efforts at lobbying for tougher drunk-driving laws and enforcement.

Things have gotten better, but we're not there yet. There are still psychopaths among us who value their own cheap thrills, their own drunken sessions, over our lives. We should show these people the same concern they show for us, and lock them up for years when they are caught driving drunk.

Alcohol was illegal once...I now understand why. Drunk drivers make it hard on everyone else who would like to have a drink once in a while...
