I'm delivering a pizza Friday night to the "projects", I see 4 teenagers walking on the side of the road. I stop at the stop sign and as I'm getting ready turn left, an empty 20oz plastic bottle hits my hat, windshield pillar and bounces off my side mirror. I've got the top down on my convertible. I turn the car off and get out. I'm going to have a "talk" with these kids.

I ask them why did they throw a bottle at me, they deny it and I call b.s., pick up the bottle and put it in the car. We exchange words, one of them is the bad@$$ of the group and he starts to get abusive, he even called me the "N" word. He is acting tougher than he really is and I can see it in his eyes, he just wants to show off. I used to fight in the Army and I'm not going to run away this night.

I wanted admission of the act and an apology but he wants to act all tough, I tell him if he really wants to kick my @** then he had better get started because I have a pizza to deliver, he just gets louder and more profane, I'm as calm as buddha, it's one of my good traits when things get difficult and it has served me well in the past.

The louder he gets the braver his friends start to get, one of them sees that I'm not impressed and tells me that all four of them are gonna kick my @**, two of them don't say anything. I laugh at him but as I do the bad@$$ kid went around my car and grabbed the pizza bag off of the passenger seat.

I reach into my pocket and pull out my phone and tell the closest one to me (who appears to not be as threatening or as stupid as the others) to tell his friend to bring it back or I'm calling the police, bad@ss says "I got yo F'n pizza what you gonna do M.F'r?" As he is walking away with the pizza under his arm, turned sideways!. I tell the closest one again you better tell him to bring it back or.....he tells his friend but he doesn't listen.

I've got the phone in my hand, I've put the three digits, 911 into the phone and I'm about to hit call and I look up and guess what I see 15 feet in front of me?

A patrol car with the lights off watching us. I yell to the cop "He just stole my pizza". The cop jumps out of the car, telling the thief to drop the pizza (I cringe because there is no way this pizza is gonna survive all this) the thief resists the cop, the thief drops the pizza bag on the ground, they wrestle for about a second, the tazer comes out, I see the laser sight beam shining on the thief and wonder is that a gun or a tazer? The kid has a moment of clarity and does possibly the only smart thing he has ever done in his life, he gets on the ground like the cop tells him to do. He gets cuffed.

One of the other three wants the money out of the grounded kids back pocket but the cop says no. Two of them get belligerent towards the first cop as more cops show up, two more are on the ground, cuffed. Long story shot, bad@$$ gets charged with strong arm robbery and two others get charged with disturbing the peace. I tell the cops that the one kid tried to diffuse the situation so they let him go free but like the others, are not residents and all are banned from the development.

I pick the pizza bag up look inside the box and I'm amazed, it is in perfect condition, looks like it just came outta the oven and it's still warm, not hot, but warm. I finish answering some questions, get in my car and deliver the pie. The cop calls me later and says the bad@$$ is under age and was released to his parents until the court date.

I got a $4 tip. :D - Dale

The Penthouse thing was for another story sorry....:p

What a story! Good thing they weren't "packing."

Did you tell the pizza recipient what his/her dinner had gone through?

Did you tell the pizza recipient what his/her dinner had gone through? slipped my mind, Jim.;) I was keeping my eye on it while the thief was carrying it around, if he would have opened it I would have thrown it away. - Dale

Thanks for the concern everyone. It really didn't seem like an out of control situation at any time, just some stupid choices were made by some teenagers. I suppose I could have let them hit me and my car with the bottle and I could have drove off but it's not in my nature, sometimes I also wonder if this way of reacting will put me in danger too.

Calculated risk or stupid bravado, sometimes they look and act the same. Only five instances of this type of behavior of almost 60k deliveries, in ten years. I'll go back there tonight I'm sure. When I drove through the crowd of on lookers (50-75) last night not one person said anything ill towards me, even after I got out of sight of the police, most people are genuinely sensible and don't cause trouble.

My neighbor is working on a Model A right now....I gotta go see this! :D - Dale

Dale, stay safe out there!

It is good to have support like that when you need it. :)

Can you get pics of that Model A? I'm a sucker for antique automobiles like that. :o

Finally a cop around when you need one. I have delivered pizzas before but mainly stayed in-store. I don't know what it is about pizza delivery vehicles that prompts others to act like idiots. I once heard that pizza delivery drivers with a car topper are one of the most robbed from professions. Good to hear that you handled the situation so calmly.

Yeah, the topper's just a giant sign that basically says "Hey everyone, I'm all by myself, I've got at least $20 on me but probably more, and I've been trained to hand you all my money if you ask for it". I guess some pizza stores make you cash out your money bag every time you have over $20, but when I was working very often I'd be walking around with at least $100 on me by the end of the night.

There's a bunch of scams and whatnot you gotta watch out for as a driver for you safety. But man, you should have definitely not have stopped when they threw the bottle at you or whatever it was. After 60k deliveries, you gotta remember pizza drivers are at the bottom of the ladder. And yeah, well maybe it's worth your life for $4, but not mine. I think your problem is you're getting comfortable. You gotta look out and be safe always.

bomber991,
You speak sensibly on all points. No topper on my car that night. I was more militant than comfortable. If it had gotten "difficult" I would have had an out. - Dale

People call me (and my close friends) crazy, but we know quite well what some of you drivers go through. That's why our "standard" tip runs 20% ($5 minimum) and foul weather can push that up to 33% ($10 minimum).

Unfortunately, we can't get any delivery where we live right now so no one gets any tips any more.

It occurs to me that cellphones now have enough bandwidth and data
capability that when one calls 911, it could also not only send
its exact location but also start sending a rapid stream of
pictures, if not video, from the camera. So you dial and point
the phone at the perps, throw it on speaker, and start describing
the incident: "the one on the left, blue hoodie, he's the one
that started all this, and the dipwad in red is the one trying
to walk off with my pizza ..." and the cops have all the info
they need right there without trying to take a report full of
memory-faulty descriptions. Pix are sent out to available
cruisers and they already know who to pick up. They're also
already nailed even if they try to overpower the victim and
take the phone; the data's already out.
