I have noticed the different 'titles' that users have here and have tried to make some sense of it, but haven't so I'll just ask.

What are the criteria for the various titles on the forum - such as junior member and skilled hypermiler.

Just wondering

Most forum software has default titles that change as the number of posts increase. I think Senior Member starts at 100 posts, and Veteran at 500 or 1000. At every site the admins can customize this as they see fit.

You can go into User CP (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/usercp.php) can customize your title to nearly anything if you wish.

Thanks, how about the skilled or expert hypermiler tag on the mileage log graphic?

Thanks, how about the skilled or expert hypermiler tag on the mileage log graphic? My previous answer is strictly the number of posts made.

When you go to Mileage Logs (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/../cmps_index.php?page=garage) to record a tank, a green pic will be generated you can include in you sig. The milage database compares your results against the EPA to determing if that members is a hypermiler, skilled hypermiler, or expert hypermiler.

for your blazer and other pre-2008 vehicle, skilled at anything above epa to 124.99%, expert at 125 to 149.99%, elite above that value.

For vehicles 2008 and newer, I believe it's 150% for expert and 175% for elite

Thanks everyone, that solves the mystery for me. Now I know where my goals and achievements meet. I don't know that getting to elite is practical for me (would have to get the blazer above 27mpg - wow!), but expert at 22.5mpg is not too far away......I think!?

You get the skilled hypermiler title for a donation of just $10.00 to www.cleanmpg.com and for only $20.00 you get the expert title!:woot: I'm just kidding! It's based off the percentage above the combined EPA. I don't know for sure but I think 120% is expert, I'll find out one day but if you get there first let me know, OK? :D - Dale

You have to have 5,000 miles logged before you get the title on the mileage logs page. On the signature banner, it's always there.

Thanks. And the shameless solicitation for donations has merit too huh?

For those who don't know or haven't seen it...there is a donation button for this site on the left side of the page so that server fees and miscellaneous expenses like the monthly moderators "Fly them in for the all you can eat lobster dinner and the popular bring your own Hummer drag racing clinic" given by Wayne "Too Fast" Gerdes.

Seriously. Wayne keeps this site going with his own efforts and the help of all the moderators, if you think you've benefited from their hard work then a few saved gallons worth of money is a big help to keep this site functioning. Ask Wayne about the $10.00 donation, get a cool www.cleanmpg.com bumper sticker. I got mine and now chicks only laugh at me when I'm naked! It's a clown tattoo on my....:D - Dale

What does it say?

"I donated to CleanMPG.com and all it got was this stupid sticker."
:D

(Speaking of which I didn't get a thing for my $30 donation. The gas I have saved has been well worth it though.)

The breakdown might make sense for some cars, but for other cars it doesn't make sense. eg, 2007 Jetta 5-speed manual EPA is 22/30, but 2008 Jetta 5-speed manual is 21/29. And yet the percent difference for skilled, expert, and elite are disproportionate to the difference in EPA ratings for what's essentially the same car. (ie gimme my expert status dammit!).

JHU, there is an adjustment factor in the programming for newer cars in an attempt to match up the actual numbers to earlier EPA.

When I can finally get some time I'll be overhauling the entire system to use nothing but the new EPA ratings. Take a look at the number of vehicles in the database (listed at the top left of the garage page) and you'll see that this is a non-trivial effort...

Vehicles: 1909

Guessing... The number of vehicles making it a larger effort is due to the fact you plan on looking up new EPA for them all?
If that is the case, I would be willing to help, I can not speak for others but... I am sure others would also help.

Thanks, guys -- that's part of it. The other parts are updating all vehicles to the new EPA and rewriting the actual programming that currently computes ratings based on those EPA numbers.

I remember downloading an Excel spreadsheet that converted the old EPA numbers to the 2008+ numbers and it was pretty accurate for conventional powertrains. Hybrids have a different curve and they had a steeper decline in the transition to the 2008 numbers. For most cars, though, perhaps a simple multiplication could be applied to change the old numbers to the 2008 equivalent.

Hi, Maxx -- the multiplication trick is what is currently being done (for back conversion of the newer EPA for ratings calculations) but it isn't entirely satisfactory.
