in recent months i've purchased an elecrtic weed eater and a reel mower. i still have a gas powered edger and was considering this...http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_07183482000P?mv=rr#reviewsWrap
i had no issues selling my gas mower, so i thought i could easily sell my edger as well. thoughts? anyone ever own a manual edger? does it work as well as a gas one?
thanks, scott(someone who is tired of oil and gas!)

Never used one, but I'd like to hear some feedback too. I've got a couple years' worth of growth to cut through (and a corner lot with a LOT of edge to cut), and I'm wondering how a manual one would do. I sure like the price if it will do the job.
If there's any question about whether a manual one would do the job, based on my past experience I'd HIGHLY recommend ditching the gas one and getting an electric model, as long as your yard is small enough to keep you within cord reach of an outlet. They work GREAT. I had one at my first house, and seeing how much they cost now I wish I'd kept it.
FWIW, on the mower front I'm a big fan of electric over manual. I have both, but the pushreel has a hard time with tall weeds (which means you need to mow weekly whether the grass needs it or not, because it will just push dandelions over rather than cutting them), and it has a really hard keeping up with spring growth (in our part of the country the grass grows several inches per week in April and May). The electric blasts right through even the thick stuff as long as you sharpen the blade every year or two.

i'm not crazy about a corded electric edger. can't seem to find a cordless. i'm hoping the manual one has gearing of 2 to 1 or better. 1 to 1 would no doubt be about useless.
the price is what has peaked my interest as well. i could sell my gas one, and make a significant profit even after buying the manual.
in regard to mowing, i've got 3 kids to mow for me:Banane26:, so i just go behind them w/ the weed eater to cut the missed weeds. it is frustrating to have to both mow and weed eat the same area.

Back when I had a lawn I used one of these and it worked very well. Impressively neat edging. As one of the commenters noted, it gives you (or your kids) a nice workout at the same time.

OMG I had to use those things when I was a kid. The classic stick edger! Keep your gas edger for early season or when you have to get heavy on the edging. Then use the stick for normal week to week action.
I hated those darn stick edgers. Truth be known I dislike yard work period. One of the reason's I have a big rider for a little yard. I want the task don fast. :)

I too feel like yard work is time lost. I just mowed my yard yesterday and that's 45 minutes I will never get back.:o I do however enjoy gardening vegetables, fragrant and/or pest inhibiting flowers because the results are more than a nod to trying to impress your neighbors.
Did you know that one idea of mowing your yard was to simulate the turf that the wealthy ranchers of sheep and cattle enjoyed from their grazing. The lawnmower was faster and easier than a slingblade, mmm hmmm and didn't leave manure or bare spots from grazing animals.

I'm fond of corded gardening tools, even corded mowers. I have an electric weedeater that uses the universal type connector and have attachments for tilling, pruning and edging. The edger work great. In fact all the attachments work great... except the string trimmer. LOL

One of the reasons I moved to a condo.... Anything more than a small patch of lawn seems like a major time drain to me.

I'm not one for straight lines in the garden anymore (or even mono-culture lawns), but back when I lived in town that was the right tool for trimming straight sidewalk edges. More effort than the weed wacker but a neater better job. It isn't as versatile as a string trimmer though, so you still might want to hang onto the trimmer.
