General Motors Corp. said it would have no additional details Monday on which plants might be closed as part of the company’s latest restructuring.
GM announced that it is cutting its number of assembly plants from 47 to 34 by the end of 2010, and to 31 by 2012.
Arlington plant appears to be relatively safe because it is the only GM plant currently building full-size sport-utility vehicles — one of GM’s most profitable vehicles, even with the industry’s lower sales volumes.
“I think we’ll know more in the next week,” said Wendi Sabo, spokeswoman for the Arlington plant, which employs about 2,400 people. The plant announced last week that it will be among the GM plants shut down for nine weeks this summer to help reduce inventories at dealerships. The downtime starts May 11.
Meanwhile on Monday, Ford’s president of the Americas said his company is not preparing to take similar steps. Ford mortgaged its production plants and many of its facilities two years ago to accumulate a $20-plus billion fund that the company can rely on in a difficult economy — for operational expenses, as well as developing new vehicles.
