A Streamlined Team Presses On for the (tank) Finish

A monumental mark was set by an American Auto Manufacturer this morning. The world over should applaud Ford Motor Co. for keeping their head high and manufacturing an extremely efficient auto. The team work and dedication was evident as they have all pulled together with a common goal. It was reported that they were even hard at work in a conference room at the hotel as late as 12:30 am. CleanMPG applauds Ford and all the people who made the "1000 mile Tank" possible...Ed.

* The Ford Fusion Hybrid team has achieved more than 1,000 miles – over 47 continuous hours – on a single tank of gas, raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

* Passing the 1,000 mile mark at 9:08 a.m. this morning, the team will continue as their unmodified, regular production Fusion Hybrid has nearly one-third of a tank of fuel remaining

* The most fuel-efficient, mid-sized sedan in America – the Fusion Hybrid – driven by a team of Ford hybrid engineers, a fuel efficiency expert and a NASCAR star, achieved more than 80 miles per gallon using Eco-Driving techniques

At 9:08 a.m. this morning, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid team hit the 1,000-mile mark on a single tank of gas, and is continuing its ultimate fuel-efficiency challenge with nearly one-third of a tank of fuel remaining.

The 1,000-mile mark was achieved with the Fusion Hybrid 1,000-Mile Challenge team leader and NASCAR driver, Carl Edwards, behind the wheel. Other team members include world-record breaking hypermiler Wayne Gerdes and several Ford hybrid engineers.

The 1,000-Mile Challenge started at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, from Mount Vernon, Va., and is expected to end on Tuesday, April 28 in Washington, D.C.

A regular production version of the Fusion Hybrid – the most fuel efficient mid-sized sedan in America – delivered over 80 miles per gallon over the course of 47 hours of continuous driving. The team will continue to drive until the fuel tank is depleted.

The vehicle is being put to the test to demonstrate Ford’s commitment to be the best, or amongst the best, in fuel economy in every vehicle segment in which it competes and to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the process.

As part of the event, the team is conducting clinics for media and customers in the Fusion Hybrid, providing interviews and vehicle demonstrations on how simple techniques can make a significant difference to real world fuel economy numbers.

The team also is uploading regular images and video of the challenge to YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and www.media.ford.com (http://www.media.ford.com).

Mileage-maximizing techniques that the Ford team used and recommend to consumers include:

* Slowing down and maintaining even throttle pressure;
* Gradually accelerating and smoothly braking;
* Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and anticipating traffic conditions;
* Coasting up to red lights and stop signs to avoid fuel waste and brake wear;
* Minimize use of heater and air conditioning to reduce the load on the engine;
* Close windows at high speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag;
* Applying the “Pulse and Glide” technique while maintaining the flow of traffic;
* Minimize excessive engine workload by using the vehicle’s kinetic forward motion to climb hills, and use downhill momentum to build speed; and
* Avoiding bumps and potholes that can reduce momentum

We have the new Insight. 1 week old today.

Filled it yesterday and with 368 miles it returned 45.4 mpg. I drove it about 100 miles and my 16 year old daughter put the rest on it. How is that for "real world?" She a lot of around town cruising on it.

My boss got a new Insight Saturday and is averaging about 45 mpg with it also.

8:15AM Saturday to 9:08AM Monday = 47hrs 53min = 47.9hrs

1,000mi/47.9hrs = 20.9mph

They did stop every 2 hours and change drivers. They have moved to 3 hour intervals now since they lost 2 drivers.

Whew! I feel better now. I'm going on a 500 mile trip next month, but I don't think I can maintain 21 mph without missing the wedding...

Nice Job by everyone. This definitely astonishing achievement for Ford, their engineers and of course Wayne.:) This just go to show that if an American company is determined then, it can compete with best of the world and can beat them easily. :flag: I hope this bring more people to hypermiling and convert the non-believers. {cough...AAA...cough}

Well, I knew that Wayne and the people that he helped train to be good hypermilers would be able to pull off the 1,000 mile challange but to approach 1,500 miles?? Good to see, and good for Ford too! :flag:

Either Wayne or the tweeter message transposed the last two digits.
7.5, or 5.7 ?

I want to know if my "guess" gauge is over 99.5 accurate ;)

Congrats Wayne!

I'd love to hear more about the traffic conditions during the drive, esp. during the day and how much the drivers had to stop. Maybe they could achieve 85 or 90 mpg if the course were more level and had no traffic probs?

It's going to be a while before I'm in the market for a new car, but I'm going to have to take a serious look at the FFH when that time comes. Color me impressed.
