Gonna check out this car tomorrow.
96 geo metro
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/cto/1138806305.html
he claims to be able to get low 50s going 55-60 mph on the highways and it runs at a low rpm at that speed. only a 3 cyl. motor, but I want mpg not fast accel.
epa combined 44 mpg, compared with 33 on my mirage, could be good for 80-90 mpg with some vigorous hypermiling :)
Mabye I can plug in my scangauge and see what it can do, then make an offer. :D

Looks promising but your Mirage is much cleaner... Hard to go from a straight, rust free car to that, but the odds are good you'll get great mileage from it. :)

Yeah true, the mirage is amazingly rust free, but with its crappy low gears i hate driving it on the highway, and usually end up either avoiding the highways and putting on lots of extra miles if I got time, or taking my van!
plus the mirage really isnt the best running car either, I can still get good mileage though if I keep the motor off as much as possible ;)

Hey, that's how 'Lantrific gets around the inefficient iron block under its hood. ;)

Took it for a spin today, not a bad little car, but it has the same problem as the mirage like 2800 rpm at 55 mph even with a 5th speed! It was a horrible area in north minneapolis to hypermile. all the slow streets were loaded with stopsigns, and the faster streets were loaded with traffic in a hurry giving me no room to pulse and glide much.
I still ended up with 49 mpg over 11 tough miles in rush hour, so the car has potential .
I actually probably got a bit more, for some reason just like the last 96 metro I drove, my scangauge would not stay on with the car on but the motor off. it would freeze then turn off, i would hit the lower button and it would come on, then start working properly. but by that time most of the glide would be eaten up! what is with my scan gauge and metros?? I have used it with other cars and never have this happen! At least it wasn't showing slight fuel consumption like it does in my van with the engine off...
It was rustier that it looked online too. I offered 500 bucks, but I don't think I want it even for that unless the scangauge issue could be fixed. kill switch mabye?

Michael, it had issues in Chris' Saturn too, I recall. I still think there might be something odd with your ScanGauge?
Regardless, I think you should keep an eye out for a better condition Metro.
Just my humble opinion.

Yeah I remember the issue was it was reading a small fuel consumption with ice off. it does that in my van too. a little annoying but not a big deal. but it shutting off after almost every fas in the metros is unacceptable.
i have seen some nicer metros for sale but too high priced and with this scan gauge not working correctly in them I think I will forget about metros, unless I find an XFi ! ;)
