Rear of the 1,000 mile Challenge 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid – 39 mpgUS combined and 1,000 + miles on a single tank of fuel... We hope :)

Dearborn, MI – As we previously reported on Ford's 2010 Fusion Hybrid in a Challenge Marathon drive for Charity (http://cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=201414), this weekend, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid is being put to the ultimate fuel-efficiency test. A team of drivers, including NASCAR star Carl Edwards and world-record breaking hypermiler Wayne Gerdes, will attempt to drive more than 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the process.

The 1,000-Mile Challenge starts at around 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, from Mount Vernon, Va., and ends the morning of Monday, April 27, in Washington, D.C. The team will drive for more than 43 hours continuously to reach the 1,000-mile goal. The drivers will do stints of between two and three hours each and will have regular breaks to ensure safe driving is maintained. Already rated as the most fuel-efficient, mid-sized sedan in America, the Fusion Hybrid will need to average at least 57 mpg to achieve its goal. During preliminary testing in preparation for this challenge, Ford engineers have reached as much as 70 mpg in the Fusion Hybrid by using Eco-Driving techniques.

The team will run clinics for media and customers over the weekend in the Fusion Hybrid, conducting interviews and vehicle demonstrations on how simple techniques can make a significant difference to real world fuel economy numbers.

The Fusion Hybrid being used in the challenge will be a factory produced model with no modifications or alterations and will run on regular 87 octane gas.

The team will be uploading regular images and video to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/fordstory), Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fordmotorcompany), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1228149870#/event.php?sid=497b4ad55ecaf2920fb53578997877fc&eid=88071981340&ref=search), and Twitter (http://twitter.com/Ford).
Ford is taking on the 1,000-Mile Challenge for a number of reasons:
To demonstrate Ford’s commitment to be the best or amongst the best in fuel economy in every vehicle segment in which it competes;
To highlight the crucial role the driver plays in maximizing fuel economy and demonstrate how consumers can make a difference through Eco-Driving;
To raise awareness about Eco-Driving and how the Fusion Hybrid contributes to it with the ability to run up to 47 mph in pure electric mode; and
To raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.The 1,000-Mile Challenge team
Carl Edwards, the NASCAR race star who recently bought his own 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid;
Gil Portalatin, Ford hybrid applications manager and Ford Fusion Hybrid team leader;
Sherif Marakby, graduate of Maryland University and Ford hybrid chief engineer;
Tom Rolewicz, one of Ford’s top calibration experts and hybrid system expert; and
Steve Burke, Ford product expert on hybrid applications
Wayne Gerdes, the world-record breaking hypermiling champion and founder of www.cleanmpg.com (http://www.cleanmpg.com)The mileage-maximizing techniques that the Ford team will use and pass on to consumers include:
Slowing down and maintaining even throttle pressure;
Gradually accelerating and smoothly braking;
Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and anticipating traffic conditions;
Coasting up to red lights and stop signs to avoid fuel waste and brake wear;
Minimize use of heater and air conditioning to reduce the load on the engine;
Close windows at high speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag;
Applying the “Pulse and Glide” technique while maintaining the flow of traffic;
Minimize excessive engine workload by using the vehicle’s kinetic forward motion to climb hills, and use downhill momentum to build speed; and
Avoiding bumps and potholes that can reduce momentum.

The weather is going to be smoking hot this weekend! Leave the winter parka at home!
I guess it's time to find out if it can do 57 MPG with the AC running!

Good luck Wayne! Kick some Butt!!

Smoking hot? It's not even supposed to break 90. ;) Mid to upper 80s Saturday and Sunday with lows in the low 60s. I'm guessing Wayne won't be using the AC much, but there are four other drivers to worry about. Hopefully the reduced air resistance from thinner, warmer air will help offset the AC penalty.

Hi All:

___If I hear of a driver come back with a 55 mpg or lower segment, I am going to open the hood and cut the A/C belt out! I am kidding of course ;)

___The Ford engineers I clinic'ed are all excellent technically and picked up the advanced techniques quickly. I did not have time to give them everything but they were pulling mid 60’s to low 70’s in heavy Detroit traffic and light to light so they should all perform well in Washington DC. That Northern Route is where some of them may fall apart and I will be watching their results closely during that 6 to 8-hours driving the bluff.

___I like the warm weather for FE and the way the vehicle is currently setup, I hope it is even easier than any of us may have first thought...

___You should have seen the E-Mail reply’s when I told the lead on this project that we should begin planning as a contingency to be in Washington DC an extra day because we may not run out of fuel until Tuesday ;)

___Fanamingo and Kurz, did Kaitlyn or her counterpart get a hold of you to schedule your clinics?

___Good Luck

___Wayne

So guess what? The ScanGauges didn't make it to the event. I got a call from Wayne in the early afternoon checking if I had one. Fortunately I did, so I headed out to the hotel where the group is staying to drop it off. For my troubles, he gave me a clinic this evening. I got to travel the southern portion of the event route.

I won't post my trip average yet so I don't give anyone an unfair advantage in guessing the final event mileage in Ford's 2010 Fusion Hybrid in a Challenge Marathon drive for Charity (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=201414&postcount=1). You have until midnight tonight to make your guess, and I'll post my numbers then.

Driving home afterwards without my ScanGauge was like flying blind!

Edit: Review of the FFH and clinic will follow later this weekend or early next week.

I am surprised that how much Wyane prompts them they don't show up and give a new one to him everyevent he is at. I think that would be most awesome, to give one at an even for Wyane and then at the end he could domate it, or I guess they could take it back. They are almost like a sponsor as much as their name and product get passed around here. :D

Looks like I may have even under estimated a tank with 1331 miles. Their running over 220% of combined EPA (39mpg) so far. My '09 FEH runs good at temperatures in 80F and here Wayne thought the cold in DC could hurt MPG. The real mileage will be at the pump when the tank is empty and I can tell you my SGII reads 14% high and FCG reads 4% high in my '09 FEH, so I may still have a dog in the race.

Wayne just started his final run of the day at 11:00 pm est. Here are a few more details from Ford.

Amazing results already. 1st stint got 88.4mpg out of the box. At this rate, we will go way past 1,000 miles. Hybrid1000# ^JW

2nd stint has come it - 77.6 mpg which gives us an average of 86 mpg so far. We have done 77.3 miles so far. Amazing!

Results from the 4th stint in. Still averaging 85.8mpg and covered 180 miles. We have used just 2 gallons since 8.15am!

The 6th stint is in - we are at an average of 85.9mpg and have covered 283 miles. Storm has come in and night driving is hard

I have been lurking since last year, and when I saw the connection to the 1000 mile event, I had to check this out in person!!
Early morning traffic in DC on a Saturday is pretty easy.
I live 45 min away, and I got to the "launch" point in Mt. Vernon at about 7:30am.

Mixed in with all the Ford reps, and camera people, was Wayne. He was the center of attention.
Charging the car up one last time, and topping of the tank, and finally the departure. 8:27am according to my phone.
The Ford folks were treating him with huge respect..I was invited to the hotel/command center. That's where I started my clinic in the afternoon, (which Wayne instructed).

I got to do a round trip on the south route. Started at about 2:45pm, temps were 92 at the start, and 86 at the south point turn around. My avg. at the end, 75.9 mpg. Kudos to the instructor!!!!
VERY COOL experience....Thanks again Wayne!!!

Congrats :thumbs_up:

IIRC, the combined EPA is 39 mpg, so it's at EPA + 126%.

Wayne & Co in Pennsylvania in 2005 got 110mpg on a Prius tank. That's 139% of EPA.

http://www.toyota.com/html/hybridsynergyview/2005/fall/marathon.html

But that was city driving (below 41mph). That's an unfair fight in a Prius. ;)

But you bring up a good point. If they are going highway speeds (50mph?) and getting 75+ in an EPA highway 36 FFH, then that is worthy of more explanation. The Prius/HCH equivalent of that would be 90+, which just can't be done without some serious aero mods.

I looked at your Blue Swayed and Wayne's Little Beauty gas logs and compared Wayne's trip to your best tanks.

It is amazing - even the Chief Engineer can't believe it.
Although this was intended as a charity and publicity event, I'm hoping it will also serve to encourage and inspire the engineers (and the rest of Ford) to reach even higher goals with future products. Wayne said none of them had topped 60 mpg before he did a clinic with them, and look at them now!

Carl arrived at 9.00pm tonight. What an amazing guy. Huge crash in the race, runs over the start/finish line, calls his mum to tell her he is fine, flies up to Washington and is hugely excited about the drive tomorrow. He will drive at 7.30 am and trigger the 1,000 miles. The team are so excited to see him and he is a real pro!

I talked to Wayne at 12:00est and he had to be ready for his stint in 30 minutes. At 12:30 he is taking off for 2 hrs. At 2:30 am another driver will take over for 2 hours. At 4:30 another driver will drive to a certain mileage point and then head back. Between 7:30 and 8:00, Carl Edwards will take the wheel to take it across the line at 1000 miles. Wayne will be in the back seat to coach Carl since he has not had a "Clinic" yet.

This is big - Wayne's clinic with the Ford Engineers and subsequent 3 (4?) days driving with them at 80+ MPG will be a watershed in the hypermiling movement.

These Ford Engineers will be spreading the word; look to see some design modifications in the Fusion to better accommodate Hypermiling.

Well Done !

Tank is at 81.0 mpg over 1000 miles now and they are on their way back to the hotel for interviews. Wayne said Carl is a fast learn and doing a great job! Carl Edwards will be out for a run by himself this afternoon.

After watching the video of his big crash yesterday and then him getting out of the car and running over the finish line shows the dogged determination that he truly possesses to win "the race."

WOW! I never thought I would see one of the American Big 3 come up with such a fuel efficient design in 2009!

CONGRATULATIONS to Ford and the entire 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid design team for developing such a potentially efficient vehicle with a price that can put it in the hands of so many people. The $50,000 price for their competitors efficient car in todays economy is a show piece only that can only be in the hands of families with a higher income. The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid can be sitting in the driveway of "the working man."

I'm really glad to hear that Carl is doing a stint on his own. I think it's outstanding that he's not just showing up for the glory run passing the 1000 mile mark. I think it's great that he's willing to learn from Wayne. I think it's great that he's willing to do this despite surely being very sore after that crash yesterday.

And I think it is absolutely fantastic that Ford has created such a formidable challenger in the hybrid market. I sincerely believe this may be a watershed moment in automotive history bring a truely global alternative energy vehicle to marketplace.

Heck, maybe GM will actually make a real competitor someday.

I always figured NASCAR would enjoy hypermiling. They certainly can't replicate the excitement of Daytona on US highways, so hypermiling is a different kind of excitement in the opposite direction.

They are gearheads after all, not Burt Reynolds in Smokey & The Bandit. It's low-speed NASCAR, more or less, minus the RVs ;)

Not for a bit yet. When they said "We did it" they meant the 1,000 mile mark. At that point, they still had 375 ~ 400 miles left on the tank!

Not sure about the FFH, but the FEH computer shuts down the ICE with 0.5 gallons left in the tank and let's you run EV until you stop again. Mine went about 0.75 miles uphill on the battery pack when I did that :o allowing me to take the SOC down to 29%.

I would think that is what they will do with the FFH too, but the Facebook page does describe the plan in that much detail.

Yeah, I didn't see that much on Facebook either. I have a feeling that it does something similar in the FFH. For the way they are driving, though, they can probably get an extra 30 to 60 miles out of EV mode.

Just spoke to Wayne and he has just got back from a segment. NBC 4 Washington wanted shots from a helicopter so he made the high speed northern loop. Check the news if you're in that area!

At the end of Wayne's run theScangauge segment 81.7, FCD was at 89.9 mpg, 1268.4 miles with 54 miles distance to empty but there were still 3 pips showing on the fuel gauge.

Steve took off and called in about 25 minutes ago. The low fuel light came on at 1275.2 miles and 46 miles distance to empty. They estimate that at the low fuel level, there is still 1.5 to 2 gallons left so their estimate is 1425 to 1450 miles. Only time will tell.

It’s great that Carl was up for doing this, especially after the crash this weekend!

That got me thinking, could skills learned for hypermiling apply on the racetrack? I know there are situations where they are trying to stretch a fuel run to finish a race without pitting. I doubt many/any of the techniques would applicable at speed, but during caution laps I bet you could do P/G with FAS and DWB! It would be great if the skills he picked up doing this could help win a race! Now that would be some great publicity!
