I rent movies. About 27 on average per month according to my friend at Hollywood Video. It used to cost me $16.00 a month to rent three at time for 5 days, with no limit of how many per month.

That has now changed to $15.00 a month for 2 at a time for a maximum of 7.5 movies per month with rollover for what you don't use. OR:

You can spend $40 per month and get something more favorable to gamers with unlimited movie and game rental.

For me this is a 133% increase in fees to get the same amount of movies I previously rented.

I've talked to my Hollywood V. friend and he says a lot of customers are upset and per his request, I and others have called the corporate number to voice our disappointment.

I foresee a wave of former Hollywood Video customers who predominately rent videos moving to NetFlix or Blockbuster. This won't happen for another month because H.V. is giving us a $15.00 credit this month for the new ripoff program. So I'll get my 7.5 movies:confused: this month for a dollar and cancel next month. Stocks should reflect the migration in the 3rd quarter. I'm just one of millions who use this service. Gamers will move towards Hollywood Video because of the new $40 per month program.

I'm going to Netflix in May.

Hollywood video (is owned by Movie Gallery Inc.) stock ticker: MVGR, currently $2.50
Netflix is NFLX and is currently $44.16 per share
Blockbuster Inc. is BBI and is currently at $0.86 (< a dollar)

Ford stock has went up almost 2.5X from it's low of $1.48 last month. BAC has done well too. :D-Dale

Hi Dale:

___The HV near us went out of business about a year and a half ago while BB now charges almost $5.00 per movie. I just do not go anymore... I am not much a home movie renter now that you can find most of the older titles for $5.00 at Wal-Mart. If I were a big renter, NetFlix would be one of my choices.

___We also have a new video rental service called Red Box located at our local Grocery store chain. $1.00 if you return it the next day. I tried one evening to rent a movie but what was advertised on the box and what was in the box was two different things :(

___Regarding Ford, the more I learn, the more I see a very bright future. You would be shocked as to what their pipeline consists of within the next 2-years!

___Good Luck

Red Box is usually better than that. When we rent movies, we typically go with RB, or one of its competitors. We'll possibly give NF or BB a shot this summer so we can rent some TV shows that we would like to catch up on.

You get the first night free. Selection is a problem. If you shop redbox on-line you can see which machines are missing which movies.

I like the idea of Redbox, so I rent there mostly. BB and Netflix have both lost my business, but Hollywood V. is still on my "friend" list.

I really wonder how long brick and mortar DVD Rental stores will last.

Rumor has it Redbox will be offering an IPO very soon. I know alot of people who recently started using redbox instead of the other big chains. Things are looking good for them in the future. And Ford is bank lately on the market. I can only see the FFH helping as well as their debt control. Sorry about the stock talk, back on topic, I hate Blockbuster.

Or you could do what millions of college students do and patronize your local independent video store.

$1.00/3 nights for movies and a huge selection including all the off-beat stuff undergrads want.

some are even pet-friendly:D

Redbox is my favorite,
$1.00 a night for a movie rental.
Except the machines rarely carry enough popular movies.

Yes or you could do what millions of other college students do, PIRACY!!!

Shoot I thought Hollywood Video went out of business a few years ago. Anyways them and Blockbuster both are basically dead. The brick and mortar video rental store model is just dead. There's no way for it to work.

Netflix mostly offers a superior service. The only real advantage of the stores is that you can go in today, get the movie you want, and watch it tonight. That sounds great, but you can do the same with Redbox can't you? I'll get to that in a minute. Netflix has that instant streaming ability now, but I think most people still prefer to watch their movies on a TV instead of their computer. Anyways, netflix, if you can wait a day or two, you can get pretty much any movie you want. Price wise it's cheaper. I don't have a real clue how much BB charges now, but I remember when I was little it was something like $4 to rent one move, so if you rent 3 or more movies per month Netflix comes out cheaper.

The only real competition to Netflix is Redbox. I haven't used the redbox service myself, but from what I heard it's pretty good. It's like BB and HV, you can go and get the movie now and watch it the same day. Price wise it looks like it could be a good option compared to Netflix depending on how many movies you watch a month. I think they do $1 rentals for 1 day, which is what I'd imagine most people would do.

The other competition to both Netflix and Redbox is Piracy. I don't have a bluray player, I don't have a hd-dvd player. But thanks to piracy I can download 720p and 1080p movies and watch them. Also unlike most people I just watch movies on my 22in widescreen computer monitor. Now my computer actually isn't good enough to be able to play 1080p video files, but I can still play 720p stuff.

Netflix actually competes quite well with the piracy option, at least for me. Back before HD quality movies were commonly available for download, I actually had a netflix subscription. Netflix's interface works a lot like downloading movies illegally. You just go to their website, find the movie you want, and instead of hitting download, you hit the add to que button. Now HD movies isn't the real reason I left netflix. The reason I left was that I simply stopped watching more than 1 or 2 movies a month, and even with their cheap plan it was too much money for me to spend on it.

So ultimately something is wrong here. I don't even have the option of getting a 720p digital movie on my computer for a fee, the only way to do it is illegally. Right now in my cheap and broke state, I can't say I would pay $1 to download a 720p movie to rent, but I'm sure a lot of other people would.

Actually Bomber I bet you could play 1080P.
www.CCCP-project.net

Just be sure to uninstall all codec packs and other installs.
Try both MPC and Zoom player see which one you like (They play everything without much messing).
Its really good, plays pretty much everything,
don't let the fact it was engineered for Anime watchers deter you.

Now it uses some very efficient Codec decoders.
I made a POS computer play the latest h.264 encoded video after installing it.
