2009 VW Polo w/ the 1.6L TDI – Over 80 mpg on the highway should be a slam dunk :)

Wolfsburg , Germany -- The all-new Polo. Reasonable comfort and quality plus additional safety have come together to make a better all-around car than the quirky predecessor it will replace.

The new Polo was designed to attain stricter and more comprehensive, 5-star Euro NCAP rating. The higher structural rigidity of the Polo’s body will help contribute to these results. Regarding crash test intrusion, the foot well area and side impact were lowered by 50 and 20 percent respectively.

Safety standard

The European Polo is equipped with standard Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) with Hill Hold Control (HHC), plus combined front and front seat head-side airbags (integrated in the front seatbacks), belt tensioners and belt force limiters. Unfortunately, Side curtains are optional and without them, would not meet the IIHS' Good or NHTSA 5-Star ratings.

Weight down, fuel economy up

Despite additional improvements in safety and additional convenience attributes, the Polo’s weight was reduced by 7.5 percent. With the new TDI and TSI engines and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG), reduced fuel consumption and emissions over a wider range of engine power outputs was achieved. The all-new 104 HP, 1.2 TSI is a Direct-injected (DI) turbo-charged four-cylinder engine is rated at 43 mpgUC combined on the NEDC (~ 35 mpgUS on the 08 EPA), almost 19% higher than the previous generation!

The gold standard – VW’s TDI

The Polo’s 89 HP, 1.6L TDI “BlueMotion” achieves an amazing 65.3 mpgUS on the NEDC (~ 54 mpgUS on the 08 EPA) making it the most fuel efficient five-seater diesel in the world.

Advanced sales of the four-door Polo is already in progress with an initial limited release. In late June, the full market launch of the new edition of the million unit bestseller will begin in Germany. Just two weeks later, Volkswagen will begin selling the Polo across Europe, and afterwards, around the world. If we receive a Polo variant in the US remains to be seen.

It's too bad that diesels are slow to move in this country.

To bad it's pretty slow in general hehe

Still I hope for VW's sake they can bring the 1.6 TDI Polo statewide. Right alongside a 170 hp Golf GTD :D

Just spent 2 weeks in Germany (visiting Grandma) - rented a 1.6L gasoline Golf w/ Man 5 speed - drove it like a non-hypermiler: 130-160 Km on the A-Bahn. (yup that's 100 miles per hour with a 1.6liter 4 banger)

Average Consumption over 700km of driving: 6.9l/100km

At 80KmH steady state I guesstimate it consumed way less than 3 1/2L/100km

Average Consumption over 700km of driving: 6.9l/100km = 34 MPG

At 80KmH ( about 50 MPH) steady state I guesstimate it consumed way less than 3 1/2L/100km

Imagine regular 'mericans getting a fleet average of 34 MPH !

IMO cars like this are a step in the right direction for the immediate future. Nothing fancy going on here, but minimalism. If only our Yaris was many years older it would be tempting to think about this car.
