A brief tour (http://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/pix/ussc/tour1.html) to help remind us of some of the science of getting
from place to place that was state of the art for hundreds of
years. Runs on wind power, hardtack, and grog, which are either
free or can be grown, and the emissions are, well, all organic!

hobbit,
That was a fantastic e-tour. Excellent write up and photography, with that kind of talent you could buy shoes! :D

Is the ship open to the general public or did you have special access? - Dale

It is, in fact, open for tours [and I think they're free, check
the website] but not quite as in-depth as we went. Not like there's
a whole lot of classified technology on board, but organizations
like the Navy are kind of iffy about letting the general public
scramble down tiny hatches into confined spaces... but when
the historian lady is with a group, they just stand aside.

To give you some perspective on her dedication ... I had an
earlier version of the page more or less put together, and kicked
the pointer over her if she wanted to fact-check it. She printed
the entire thing out, in color with all the pictures, red-penciled
the crap out of it, and delivered it to my desk in a neat envelope
a couple of days later. [That qualifies as "kick-ass babe" in my
book...] So her edits have been worked in.
