Gasoline hybrids, plug-in electric hybrids, and hydrogen cars all have significant disadvantages, especially if you expect motorists to buy them without subsidies, says Audi of America president Johan de Nysschen. Even the TDI (turbo direct injection) clean diesel technology that Audi champions isn't perfect, he said at a New York City meeting this week of the International Motor Press Association. But TDI may be one of the most practical solutions for energy efficiency and energy independence. "The U.S. imports 1.4 million barrels of oil a day," de Nysschen said. "If a third of U.S. drivers used clean diesel, we could send it all [imported oil] back." And Audi's coming fleet of diesel vehicles, he said, driven conservatively, may have a range of 700 miles between fill-ups. If you want motorists to buy hybrid or green cars "and they are not price competitive, guess what: It ain't gonna sell," he said.

If you want motorists to buy hybrid or green cars "and they are not price competitive, guess what: It ain't gonna sell," he said.So what about Honda's new Insight? It is price competitive.


And what about this? Reality doesn't seem to match his statements.
