While first impressions suggest Gunnery Sgt. Steve Mayhue and his 1982 Honda Civic FE are a rather odd couple, the six-foot-plus Marine and the diminutive Japanese econobox are strangely in sync. The U.S. Marines are known for being first ashore—the Civic gave Honda a foothold on our shores. >> READ MORE >> (http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060306/FREE/60223007/1027/FREE)

Please remember that the 1982 EPA numbers are not a direct comparison to the 1985-2006 numbers. in 1985 the EPA started whacking 22% off of the highway numbers and 10% on the city numbers. So the 1982 Honda Civic would be rated 37/45 today. Still, not too bad for 1982.

I did not know that. :( Like you said it is still not bad FE Ratings even when they are adjusted. :)

Hi All:

___Another piece of the puzzle in regards to the stagnation of the FE numbers over they years. Remember that the FE mileage wonders from yesteryear (Civic HF’s, VX’s, CX’s, regular Civic’s, and 3-clyinder Metro’s to name a few) not only weighed just 17 - 1,900 # range, they only had 55 - 705 HP on tap, and had little to no sound insulation let alone any safety features of merit by today’s standards. What we have today in the HCH-II for example is 2,700 #’s of front, side, and side curtain equipped hybrid running 0 – 60 in the 11 second range with > 100 HP on tap when need be. Did I mention it is really quiet as well?

___Dan, I am glad you posted the EPA FE reg changes back in 85 again. That was good information way back when as it is today.

___Good Luck

___Wayne
