diamondlarry 09-09-2006, 08:26 PM Awesome numbers! Great job!
Hi Dcoyne:
___You did it!!!! I officially welcome you to the 100 mpg club! In the Prius II no less! There are only a handful in the world that have done it in that automobile … Just in case you didn’t know ;)
___Hot d#$n and way to nail it! Did you learn and master the technique from someone over at GH or somewhere else?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 09-09-2006, 10:22 PM That is Awesome!
hawkgt647 09-10-2006, 07:35 AM Great accomplishment!
Hot Georgia 09-10-2006, 11:49 AM That IS fantastic!
How'd ya do it?

dcoyne78 09-10-2006, 02:06 PM This was on a road with very little traffic speed limit 45, but lots of straight sections for passing. I just used pulse and glide with a range of 27-40 mph accelerating at impg of 25-35 (25 downhill, 35 uphill, 30 on flats), the route out was slightly uphill (102 mpg) a little downhill on the way back to my starting point (104 mpg) small rolling hills most of the way. If anyone can't see the pictures I can try to edit them to make the trip odometer more readable. Thanks everyone for the complements. Wayne, I managed this mostly with your help, (your article on p&g and some responses you made to questions I asked of you about tips you had given to Carl H). The pictures are posted at green hybrid because I had trouble posting them here for some reason. I also pulled off a 77 mpg tank at 560 miles, my best so far. I also almost got all 99.9 bars (5 of 6) during the 103 mpg segment.
Dennis
not a bad tank

almost got 99.9 for all 6 bars (ever seen so much dust?)

philmcneal 09-10-2006, 03:30 PM more credit to the prius! where are the 100 mpg segments from the hch when you need them?
Hi Dennis:
___It looks like you should be able to nail down 85 + on your next tank at the rate you are going! Keep up the great runs before winter temps hit.
___Phil, you mean this (http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/504/103_0_mpg_19_5_miles.jpg) ;)

philmcneal 09-11-2006, 12:59 AM was there any fasing for that one? i had the impression the first gen hch had the upper hand.
Hi Phil:
___Unfortunately, yes there was. It would be extremely tough to take the HCH-II to 100 + sustained without taking manual control because its EV mode is not nearly strong enough while spinning the ICE over. This drains the pack quickly. Straight Glide works good but that ICE is still turning over. Any decent pulse blasts out assist and will not let go which also drains the pack quickly. Honda has to get off this kick of blasting out assist on any accel. At 4 of 8 bars SoC, Forced Charging appears and that really kills you as the HCH's hybrid functions literally disappear :( Tarabell has seen > 100 for short distance at 35 - 40 mph steady state however?
___The Prius II can be controlled in all aspects of P&G below 40 mph and that is where it simply shines once warmed up.
___Good Luck

Actually, a friend of mine and I have been looking into a possible HCH-2 enhancement in this very same area. We are now applying some mods on his and if it works I'll readily apply them to mine too.
Basically, it consists of introducing an IMA assist INhibitor push button (normally closed concept) to the system. We mounted the button on the dead pedal since it allows for a neater concealment of the wires.
The point is to intercept the output of the IMA MCM (Motor control module) located in the IPU thus preventing assist. So what we would envision is a means to prevent assist on all circumstances thus enhancing the use of the pack for A/C operation and strategic EV-Assist.
Now, we've ran a few tests at his "place" and so far it seems promissing. I am definitely excited about it. We'll probably be enhancing the interface circuit as well just to ensure that we do not damage the driver circuit's output . But like I said, If it works on his then I'll be the next inline. :D
We also will try interfacing to the input of the BCM and MCM in hopes that we could create a condition of inhibit but we'll need more time to ensure we don't create unnecessary IMA error codes - especially the persisting kind.
Cheers;
MSantos
Hi MSantos:
___That is a very good idea and it sounds very similar to a MIMA-lite setup. If you need any assistance, Mike DeBrowski knows the Insight’s IMA electronics beyond the schematic level and should be able to assist with any items you guys may not have considered. Can you create a nice post with pics in the Tech forum as this would be a spectacular enhancement for the HCH-II!
___DCoyne, sorry for dragging your post far OT. As most here already know, the Prius was designed for this type of drive cycle properly. I believe Honda wants to make sure the IMA equipped hybrids meet performance targets at the expense of pack longevity AND FE whereas Toyota took a much different approach as to when and where to apply assist and the results speak for themselves.

Hi Wayne,
I would love to pull off an 80+ tank, unfortunately real life usually intervenes and short trips driving my kids around or trips on the interstate drag my tanks down. If I only used the car on a commute similar to the drive where I got the 103 mpg, and used a different car for short trips and highway driving, then I would be able to do it. I don't know how your friend Carl manages to pull off his tanks in the 80s, he must be very disciplined about minimizing short trips and avoiding the interstate as much as possible, and must also have great technique( it must be nice getting lessons from a hypermiling master ).
I recently filled early to try for 99.9 on the display for the same round trip, I pulled it off briefly in the middle but came up short in the end.
99.9 mpg 47.8 miles (not a round trip however)

99.7 mpg 54.2 miles round trip

dcoyne78 09-12-2006, 04:52 PM Wayne,
I've noticed that you usually just post the links rather than the image in your posts, is this preferred? If so I will edit the above posts to preserve some bandwidth.

Hi Dennis:
___With pics like those from your Prius II posted above, post away :D
___I was one of those poor souls with dial-up not 1 year ago to before the Internet took off and know what some have to deal with when trying to read posts with a ton of pics. The Insight Marathon Attempt thread (page 3) is one I would not like to try and visit if I were on dial up ;)
___Good Luck
