Just looking at some numbers tonight.
less see if I have this right....

when I posted this the CleanMPG.com banner said:

Fuel saved by CleanMPG members
278,457.10 gallons.. and counting

278,457.10 gallons of Gasoline (ya I know some of it is diesel fuel)
x 20 pounds of CO2 for each gallon (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/Feg/co2.shtml)
= 5,569,140 pounds of CO2

In Metric tons (http://www.metric-conversions.org/weight/pounds-to-metric-tons.htm):
5,569,140 pounds = 2,526.119 Metric Tons of co2 NOT released in to the atmosphere.

EPA uses these values:

CO2 emissions from a gallon of gasoline = 2,421 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 8,788 grams = 8.8 kg/gallon = 19.4 pounds/gallon

CO2 emissions from a gallon of diesel = 2,778 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 10,084 grams = 10.1 kg/gallon = 22.2 pounds/gallon

Looks Great Allen! The combined effort of all our Cleanmpg members will prove to be more significant as time passes.

We must remember to adjust that CO2 emission savings downward slightly due to the CO2 emitted by us when we sigh after calculating the final average on a bad tank, or as we're panting with joy when we reach a new mpg goal. :D

EPA uses these values:

CO2 emissions from a gallon of gasoline = 2,421 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 8,788 grams = 8.8 kg/gallon = 19.4 pounds/gallon

CO2 emissions from a gallon of diesel = 2,778 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 10,084 grams = 10.1 kg/gallon = 22.2 pounds/gallon

You also must include the pounds of CO2 emitted by the gas tanker vehicles that transport the gas to gas stations so you can have....gas! The 19.1 pounds per gallon of CO2 emitted directly by your vehicle, then becomes 28 pounds of CO2 emitted directly & indirectly by your vehicle.

Other calculations would be CO2 produced directly by oil companies & all their gear to drill the well, lift that oil out of the ground, transport it to a refinery, refine the oil, support structures for all those....structures, etc......

But I ain't got the goods on all that....oh, boy!

Well to wheel efficiencies of various vehicle technologies are here:

http://www.transportation.anl.gov/pdfs/HV/300.pdf

page 15. A gallon of gasoline not purchased indeed represents a much larger quantity of CO2 not emitted.

At 5,569,140 lb of CO2 Not released, that is equivalent to taking a small power plant offline for a little over 2 days. (1.341 lbs CO2/kWh = 173.0MWh Saved).

Not bad at all.
