BMW 116d 3-door hatch – $26,000 USD and 53.5 mpgUS combined on the NEDC.

Munich, Germany -- The most fuel efficient luxury vehicles in the German automobile marketplace are built by BMW and MINI. The official calculation of fleet fuel consumption was carried out by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority and is a confirmation of the achievement by BMW Group of companies.

Currently, new 2008 BMW and MINI vehicles have an average fuel consumption of 39.9 mpgUS on the NEDC or ~ 32 mpgUS on the 08 EPA. This average includes everything from the smallest 116d 3-door coupe and Mini Cooper convertible all the way to the monster 7-series with a V12!

In the last two years alone, BMW has reduced fuel consumption across its lineup by 16 percent. Between 1995 and the end of 2008 the BMW Group cut fuel consumption of its vehicles sold in Europe by more than 25 percent, exceeding the respective requirements for their brands stipulated by the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) commitment.

Consider this. Within the US, BMW’s entire German model lineup has better average fuel economy than every single Ford other than the single 32 mpgUS combined rated 09 FWD FEH. Toyota has just two that can compete. The 46 mpgUS rated Prius and the 32 mpgUS rated Yaris with a stick. Honda has just one in the form of the HCH-II rated at 42 mpgUS. GM and Chrysler have none. This is vs. the average across all BMW’s in Germany!

At the same, BMW vehicles are still well ahead of their competitors in terms of average engine output - clear evidence of the success of BMW EfficientDynamics.

"This success is impressive affirmation of our ability for innovation and sustainability," explained Dr. Klaus Draeger, head of development at BMW. "With the employed measures as well as a multitude of further technologies about to be launched, the BMW Group is excellently prepared for the challenges of the future. Draeger: "With EfficientDynamics we will comply with the future EU C02-Targets for new cars. The payment of fines is not an option for us."

Federal Motor Transport Authority statistics show not only a significant superiority of BMW EfficientDynamics compared with similar measures implemented by other premium vehicle manufacturers, but also the BMW Group's outstanding position within the overall market. Regarding fleet fuel consumption determined by the FMTA, the BMW Group beats Volkswagen, Europe's largest high-volume manufacturer which includes far more micros, A and B-Blass sized vehicles.

At the Geneva Auto Show, Dr. Norbert Reithofer -- Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG had the following to say.
BMW has created history in Geneva. Exactly two years ago, we presented Efficient Dynamics here for the first time. And back then, I promised you that we would combine a maximum of “sheer driving pleasure” with a minimum of fuel consumption.

And that’s exactly why we can already offer our customers Premium Selection used cars with these advanced fuel-saving technologies.

Today I can say:
The BMW Group builds the most efficient premium cars worldwide. On average, our customers save one liter of fuel per 100 kilometers compared to our competitors.

The BMW Group has reduced its fleet’s carbon emissions more than any other manufacturer. Our EU fleet consumption decreased by over 25 percent between 1995 and 2008. We walked the talk and fulfilled the ACEA voluntary commitment. And now we are making our contribution to meeting the EU’s emission performance targets for 2012 and 2015.

The BMW Group’s EU fleet emits an average of 156 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This is significantly below the fleet emissions of other premium manufacturers.

Each new BMW and MINI model will be equipped with EfficientDynamics. We will keep adding new chapters to the story.
With the BMW 1 Series, customers can choose between 19 models that are EU5 compliant. Among them is the “World Green Car of the Year”—the BMW 118d. And today, we are presenting an even “greener” BMW. Premium means sustainable. This is the BMW brand’s new entry-level diesel model—the 116d!

At present, the BMW 116d is the car with the lowest fuel consumption and the lowest emissions in the BMW portfolio. It has average fuel consumption of 63.5 mpgUS on the EU (NEDC) test cycles. Efficient Dynamics is directly responsible for cars like the BMW 116d.

For those not interested in the 3 or 5-door bulbous rear hatch appearance of the 116/118d, there is always the convertible ;)

The 2012 CO2 emissions are 140g/km. If they spent 13 years to decrease by 25%, how will they decrease by 10% (from their 156g/km average) in 4 years ?

I looked at half their documentation, for their smallest cars, and I found only 1 car under 120g/km. French constructors didn't decreased CO2 emissions as much during that period, but any one has at least 6 cars/motors combination under this limit.

Now may be France isn't an European country ;)

Denis.

Hi Groar:

___First off we have to recognize they are a luxury based auto manufacturer. Not saying that is a good thing but they simply are. Next item is BMW increased FE by 16% in the last 4-years. I am not sure why BMW likes to tout the 25% reduction figure over the past 13-years but the bulk of the decrease has come about in the last 2-years.

___With further electrification and Turbo-diesel downsizing, they will be able to reach the 140g/km target as that is less than 10% away.

___WRT 120g/km, the 116 and 118d's are below that as Mini-D's.

___Good Luck

___Wayne
