In smart car?? --Ed.

An alleged car thief who took off in a fuel-thrifty Smart car pushed the needle too far Friday when the mini-mobile ran out of gas on the Long Island Expressway, according to the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department.

The blue 2008 Smart, which can get 40-plus miles per gallon, came to the attention of deputies with a 1 p.m. call about an unattended minicar next to the LIE between exits 57 and 58, said Chief Michael Sharkey.

A deputy ran the plate through his computer and found the tiny two-seater was the same one reported stolen from a King Kullen parking lot in St. James on Thursday. A short time later, a deputy spotted the alleged thief walking on the... http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper/printedition/saturday/longisland/ny-lismar286052656feb28,0,7920209.story

Another very dumb thief. If you run out of gas with 30 bags of heroin on you in a stolen car, just abandon it. Also stealing such a noticeable car is bad idea. How many people in a given city are going to have a smart car of the same color? Not many!

well, if you're that dumb, then the chances are good you're going to be a thief

haha, yeah but what kind of drug lord is going to trust you with that much heroin? I mean - that's a sizable investment right there.

He ran out of gas between exits 57 and 58 on the LIE. Right off exit 58 is a Hooters and then a gas station. He could have sold some of the controlled substances (there are plenty of buyers in that area of town) and then gotten a gallon of gas and a plate of hot wings. A gallon would get him 41 miles, according to the EPA, and that'd land him somewhere in wine country on the north fork.

I think that's one of those funny oxymoron scenarios - "dumb" thief steals "smart" car.

There was also another lesson: Higher mpg cars require refueling too.

There is a reason why illegal drugs are called "dope." ;)

I am enthused to see the criminal element embracing FE cars. This is truly a sign of universal adoption when the heroin dealer skips stealing that fancy Escalate and instead chooses to jimmy the door on a 3-cylinder fuel sipper. I look forward to quote from future felons:

"I may be looking to screw up some peoples minds and bodies, but there's no reason I have to screw up the planet we all share, at the same time."
