Nissan Motor Co.'s pared-down list of auto shows it will attend in its next fiscal year means the Japanese automaker will not return to Detroit in 2010, having already passed on this year's North American International Auto Show.
But Detroit is not alone. Nissan plans to skip as many major auto shows as it attends in the 2009 fiscal year that runs from April 1 through March 31, 2010, and a further 60 regional shows also are affected.
"Nissan by no means was targeting to be, or not to be, in Detroit," said Nissan spokesman Scott Vazin. The automaker blames "severe and prolonged headwinds throughout the world," and cites the need to use its dwindling resources prudently.
In North America, it will have a presence at the New York auto show in April, but will skip the Los Angeles show in November. And in addition to skirting Detroit next January, it will not have a stand at the Chicago show in February 2010. After Nissan announced it would not be in Detroit and Chicago in 2009, a coalition of dealers tried to step in to fill the void.
