What type of hybird system does GM use anyway?

The hybrid system is a scaled down version of the one they use in the buses. The electric motors are in the transmission and allow motion without the engine running. The problem with this design is that it while it can be scaled smaller in size (the Vue 2-mode uses roughly the same design in a smaller form factor), there is no real room for cost reduction. And since it still uses four forward speeds with three planetary gearsets and friction clutches, it still is subject to wear and tear like any transmission, and replacement or rebuilding would likely be more costly than a new car. This is one of those cars where you'd want the longest extended warranty you can get. And also, it'd be a used car to avoid, unless you know it was driven very carefully.

Usually GM touts their highway mileage...I guess we can take this as "This is a city traveller, on the highway it tells the same story...which isn't really a good thing"

Well, I guess the numbers are true - but for some reason I don't think 'city car' when I think Cadillac Escalade. I suppose if you make a living carting groups of people to and from the airport and can write off the lease as a business expense the hybrid Escalade might make more sense than a regular one. (Then again, depending on the price premium, it might not.)

Oh -- the XC90 (not exactly a city car, either,) gets 14 mpg city according to GM's sign. Take that, Volvo!

In my text-browser that tends to show image filenames, one of
Chuck's lines came out like
__ * 2009 Escalade Hybrid - 20mpg Bananajump __
which gave me this sudden visual of an Escalade with big aggie
tires sailing through the air over a huge stack of fruit crates
in the middle of a stadium.

Luxury SUV has to be one of the stupidest terms in the english language. Why do we as sensible human beings put up with such wasteful idiotic nonsense?

Funny thing is, in Hillsborough County, that escalade hybrid would no doubt be considered a limousine, but the high end prius wouldn't :(

_H*Unintended humor. :D

This is embarrassing for someone that is around a bunch of Texas Aggies - is an "aggie tire" a monster truck tire?

Escalade hybrid - 20 mpg city / 21 mpg hwy
Mini S Convertible - 19 mpg city / 29 mpg hwy

MPG combined - no contest.

the interesting thing to me is that 20mpg is the best that the Escalade will do and they are measuring that against a Mini Cooper S at its worst. Spin makes me feel ill.
