View Full Version : 'Stat Setting
visionseeming 02-20-2009, 03:43 PM Well, isn't this the question of the century? What do you guys usually keep the thermostat at in each season? Do you have a 'stat? :p
Well, since I have limited power over the 'stat where I live, I am forced to sweat year round even in a t-shirt and shorts. Its never below or above 68 with the heating(which I will NEVER understand why it exists here), and the A/C is never turned on unless my parents start crying about how its a "scorching" 90 degrees inside(which is pretty rare here)...even though they usually heat the van to 100+ in December when we drive anywhere.
Of course, If I lived here alone, the furnace blower and A/C would be unplugged and turned off at the breaker, and the gas line shut off. The windows would be open every night and closed during the day.
bomber991 02-20-2009, 03:52 PM Summer time I try and keep it under 85, winter time I try to stay above 68. You would think that large range of temperatures would allow me to have a good chunk of the year where I don't run any a/c or heater. But here the weathers really only in between that for a few weeks a year.

Yeah, I mean If I live there I would certainly try to go without A/C, but If it reaches over 100 inside I probably would turn on the A/C. Granted, I hate warmth and heat, and feel warm above 50. There is no question of not needing heating there for me, but I think even the winters are hard to acclimate to considering the wide range of temperatures, and the huge contrast from summer at times.
Of course, I would NEVER willingly choose to live anywhere near the central part of the U.S., but I would try to make the most of the situation.
Taliesin 02-20-2009, 04:11 PM Summer: 80 (would be higher, but the room mates and the long hair cat would hate me)
Winter: 60
SentraSE-R 02-20-2009, 05:55 PM Summer 85 (only about 5-10 days/year)
Winter 68 (between 5 and 10 p.m.)
jkp1187 02-20-2009, 05:57 PM T-stat set to 59*F at night, 67* during the day. (Mrs. jkp1187 works at home, otherwise it would only stay at 67* during the evening hours.)
Haven't really worked it out how the summer days are going to be. We just moved into our house last fall, haven't spent the summer here yet.
fuzzy 02-20-2009, 11:49 PM Winter: 55F at night, 68 in the day. It used to be 63-65, but aging metabolisms are forcing it to rise.
Summer: heater breakers are turned off. When inside temps rise above 80, I start running a box fan in a window at night. For the past two summers, an inside max/min thermometer has peaked at 83, even on the several days the outside went slightly above 90. Its been several years since we saw a 95.
I'm looking at a mini-split heat pump to displace most of our electric heating. It also has an "A/C" mode. What is that? :-)
jcp123 05-02-2009, 08:10 AM Summer, set to 78*. Any cooler and we actually simply find it uncomfortably cold.
Winter, set to 68*-72*.
We use the heat far more vigorously than a/c...hell, in CA we didn't even have a/c on our house (nor did I in my car), so we aren't all that beholden to it even today. We use it more to knock down the summer humidity than anything.
NiHaoMike 07-28-2009, 09:26 PM 82F in the summer and 63-65F in the winter. I use a high power 12v PC fan as a desk fan to reduce A/C use. I think I'll actually turn the heat even lower during the winter and use a reflector incandescent or halogen lamp to stay warm and provide light.
drimportracing 07-29-2009, 12:59 AM I range from 80-75F in the summer and 60-65F in the winter. - Dale
Die2self 07-29-2009, 02:17 PM programable 'stat came with the new system last year, so it varies through out the day and I have it use the fan to circulate the air(and filter it). Also, use ceiling fans and a dehumidifier and humidifier when it calls for it, like dehumidifing when the AC is not on all that much to do it properly.
Summer - 78 during the day, 80 at night (kids and wife are at home during the summer)
once they go back to school, it will be 82 during the day and back to 78 when we get home and back to 80 at night with circulation. (SEER 15 new AC last year)
winter - 62 during the day (when no one is there), when we come home it is 68 and then 65 over night. (NG new furnce last year)
FSUspectra 06-25-2010, 02:17 PM joining this discussion late i see... 79-80 in summer and 65 in winter... baby's room (born this past January) with oil radiator at 72 since he refused to be swaddled and would kick off blankets...
Hi All:
80 in the summer when I am in the house alone, 74 when the wife is
65 with just me and 68 when everybody else is home in the winter.
Wayne
lxmike 07-05-2010, 09:46 AM we keep ours at 80 in summertime and in winter it gets shut off.
