View Full Version : Emissions Guilt

so here's my confession. I'm a willful polluter. My 92 Paseo has an exhaust leak that makes it sound like it should be in The Fast and The Furious. The thing is that its at the flexpipe and I'm getting ready to transition to a newer, cleaner car (01 Nissan Sentra) that doesn't leak exhaust, so I really don't care to spend the energy and money to fix the leak. I scoff at huge SUVs and their unneeded presence on the road - but in reality my car spewing pre-muffler, pre-cat fumes out its underside is probably a worse polluter - especially considering the amount of miles I drive in a day. Just wanted to get that off my chest. Thanks.

I've already started pricing flexpipes.....don't like what I see so far - might try salvage.

Junkyards should have some things. Also, pre-muffler fumes are clean as long as they're post-cat.

Being that it's a flex pipe. I'd venture to go as far as to say it's pre-cat

Its pre-cat, that is certain. I've called around and the best I've found so far is the entire exhaust system off a 93 tercel - which will work - but all I really need is the flex pipe so I can weld it in. I'm holding out for a smaller part. Its on the list to get done though - first on the list actually.

could you use a muffler patch? Or is it too hot? Muffler patch kits are ~$15 IIRC.

I actually patched the damn thing. I didn't think that I could - since it was at the upstream end of the flex pipe where it couples to the exhaust pipe. I was able to weld a piece of sheet metal to both the pipe and the solid flange of the flex pipe. I'm sure it won't be a permanent 10 year warranty kind of fix, but at least the fumes are all going through the cat and out the muffler. Its surprising how much quieter the car is now. I'll be driving a Sentra hopefully within the week anyway. Thanks for the input, folks.
