View Full Version : Do we have to assume EVERBODY in MLB was Juiced?
Chuck 02-08-2009, 12:41 PM Opinion: A-Rod is A-Roid? Scandal may never end (http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/29073410/)
A-Rod has been riped in many ways, steroids was not one of them - until now. Is major league baseball a sport like NASCAR where everybody is assumed to be cheating?
worthywads 02-08-2009, 05:51 PM Yep, and why not, I don't see why it should be banned.
For that matter I think College Athletes don't get paid ENOUGH.
Chuck 02-08-2009, 05:57 PM It's going to be interesting when baseball has a player die young like NFL's Lyle Alzado (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyle_Alzado#Steroids) and see if steriods is still OK.
azraelswrd 02-08-2009, 08:08 PM It will take something like a death to make people realize the risks may not be worth the short-term gains but looking at what some of these athletes earn and will earn with the fame.... I'm not surprised that MOST professional athletes with the means to augmentation do take advantage of it.
And yes, college athletes aren't paid enough, especially at how much some programs garner from major venues i.e. men's Division 1 college football. When a coach can summon tens of millions of dollars, you know there is some serious cashflow.
As for the original point about MLB on the juice... let's use the old colloquialism as an excuse = "if you ain't cheatin' you ain't trying" and "if you ain't caught you ain't cheatin'". I mean, is that not what we teach ourselves in a [win more/win often] global culture where social Darwinism is a dogma, not by skill or talent but on accomplishments and immediate returns?
I'm curious how they obtained 3+ year old data, when I thought it was supposed to have been destroyed. Maybe MLB needs Roger Goodell to do some housecleaning, eh? BURN BABY BURN!!!
worthywads 02-09-2009, 01:05 AM Everyone is doing it, with how many deaths?
Sports is Darwin in real time and the juice seems to be winning. :woot:
Chuck 02-13-2009, 01:12 PM I'm reminded of many discussions of the EPA ratings before 2008 that listed the Prius as getting 60mpg highway, and many articles said that was not real world. Of course it was not Toyota's fault, and the EPA changed it to a more realistic 48mpg highway.
Many feel Barry Bonds 762 runs is not "real world" compared to Hank Aaron's achievement....Bud Selig is considering (http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/29149415/) making Aaron's the official home run record, but somehow my money is on him never doing it.
I'll go so far as to say that the UAW at it's height never had the power of the MLB Players Association, and they have made steroids into the mess it is now in MLB.
azraelswrd 02-13-2009, 03:28 PM Bud can't arbitrarily scoop someone's record -- Bonds hasn't been convicted of any crime and has not come up positive on any drug test. Sure, I can see Bonds has physically hulked out since his Pirates days, but he's still innocent officially.
MLB PA will not be changing anytime soon and I think they're still "protecting" the athletes by blocking as much testing as they can and playing innocent-deer-in-headlight if anything leads back to them, especially as technology improves and the undetectable is becoming detected. I heard on the radio that club owners can't ask athletes about drugs because of the union. Shocker...

koreberg 02-19-2009, 03:26 AM If you're going to strike out bonds, where do you stop? Should you go after the single season record too? What about pitching records? Do you revote all the awards now? How far do you go? How many years do you go back?
IMO PEDs are part of baseball. This is the steroid era of baseball. Its been going on since the 80s. The 70s amphetamines were prevalant. Lots of corked bats and doctored balls though history. There is cheating all throughout baseball. The idea that baseball punish anyone for past transgressions is ridiculous. If they started down that slope the hall would end up half empty.
Anything that baseball does to any players after the fact, is just as insincere an appology as arods. Baseballs cheated their fans, by not tackling the PED problem. They've barely even said i'm sorry or that they'll correct the problem. Baseball taking aways bonds record is just like arod taking credit for telling the truth. If baseball really cared, they would have fixed this in the 90s. They would have done something about sosa and mcgwire. Bonds wouldn't have a record. They wouldn't have waited until congress put the gun to their head.
Like it or not, steroids benefited baseball as much as the players themselves. Now baseball and the players are being bit by this, but ultimately its all part of baseballs story. Key parts of the story should be told in the record books and in the hall of fame. It sux but these guys got the records, they put up the numbers and did some amazing things. They should be in the hall of fame and keep the records. I'm not saying you don't put a negative spin on it. But u still tell the story. Maybe instead of an asterisk they should use a <--- to symbolize a needle or something. It stinks for the fans but steroids is baseball right now.
