Nice job Tony :D -- Ed.

Gasoline prices are beginning to creep back up reminding us all that conserving is a good idea. There is a way to save gas that doesn't require any special device. It's called hypermiling. a way to save gas that doesn't require any special potions or fancy gadgets, just concentration.

"I won't turn the engine off until I'm facing forward." Tony Reyes is an engineer at Delphi and he's also a hypermiler. That means he squeezes every mile he can from every drop of gasoline he buys. He took a normal 1999 Accord and made it more aerodynamic. "The tires and the wheel wells are the worst part of the car as far as air turbulence." He covered the holes in the wheels and in the grill, he put fenderskirts over the rear wheels and instead of the normal 30psi in the tires he goes the maximum 44pounds (really 56 but I didn't want to be liable ;))"The only negative to the higher pressures is increased noise and vibration."

And saving gas also means choosing the right parking space. "It's parked on a hill so I don't turn it on until I'm ready to move forward." And you notice the saving of gas starts immediately because if you get in the car with Tony, you'll notice he won't even start the car until everyone's in and buckled up. And the windows go up because down they create more drag. When he starts, no fast take offs, slow and steady and limited use of the air conditioner. He also takes full advantage of gravity. "Here, for example, I'll just coast and put it in neutral...coat to our turn, and here I see the light is red so I would put it in neutral and turn the engine off" Out on the road he stays in the slow lane to the right. "You always want to drive below the speed limit cuz' the faster you go the more fuel you consume."

And the only gadget he uses is a gage that tells the gas usage at the time. "On this hill you can see that now my fuel economy is 27, 26 as I'm going up the hill, but you make that up on the downhill section." On the downhill he'll either put the car in neutral or turn it off completely and coast so on the downhill he uses no gas at all. He believes it is a safe way to drive simply because he is so aware of what's he's doing. With these techniques a car that should be getting around 24miles to the gallon gets about 44 which puts him on the road to saving gas and money. And in Texas, no less!

Just barely! El Paso is right there on the border to New Mexico and Mexico. I Would definitely have watched this if I knew it was going to be on TV, I live 45 minutes away from El Paso. Cool to finally see some hypermiling news for people in the area!

Elixer, you can still watch it on the KTSM website: http://www.ktsm.com/local/hypermiling Nick Miller seems to be pretty green minded and he mentioned he is considering installing some form of solar energy on his home. He also did this piece on a solar energy startup I'm working with: http://www.ktsm.com/local/el-pasos-brightest-natural-resource. KTSM is the most watched newscast in El Paso and their reports do tend to be pretty good. They did a good job editing and summarizing an hour's worth of footage and discussion into a 2 minute segment.
