2010 Honda Insight-II – 41 mpgUS combined on the 08 EPA.

TOKYO - Honda announced that the all-new Insight hybrid vehicle will go on sale in Japan this Friday, February 6, 2009. The base five-door, five-passenger compact “G-Model” hatchback will start at ¥1,890,000 or $21,159 USD. Honda Japan has been touting the Insight-II will come in at under ¥2,000,000 price tag and they beat it by quite a margin.

As detailed in the 2010 Insight-II Preview (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18649), the Insight features a lightweight, compact hybrid IMA system that combines exceptional fuel economy with fun-to-drive performance in a small family friendly 5-door hatch.

On a relative basis, the Insight-II “G-Model” equates to the Base LX here.

With base 2009 Honda Civic costing approximately 2.3 Million Yen or $25,735 USD in Japan and $23,650 here in the US, we can deduce the Base LX will cost less than $19,500 USD minus whatever the Japanese consumption tax consists of.

Can anyone that reads Japanese please go to Honda Civic - Japan (http://www.honda.co.jp/CIVIC/) and Honda Insight-II - Japan (http://www.honda.co.jp/INSIGHT/) to help deduce the Japanese HCH-II’s current price without any consumption tax added so we can come up with a better idea as to the Insight-II’s price here in the US?

That's great news, hopefully they beat our "Under $20,000" by a large margin too for our EX model. :crosses fingers:

That seems doubtful given that they're making those things in Japan and would have to import them into the USA.

Hi Jhu:

___They make the HCH-II in Japan and ship them here as well so thus the percentage comparison... If you know anybody that can translate the pages, let us know. I do not even know which link leads to a price or build page???

___Good Luck

From the fine print, it looks like base is 1,800,000 yen w/o tax. This is from the small numbers under the MSRP w/consumption tax. That's as much as I can tell as babelfish won't translate scripts or pictures.

Google Translator (http://translate.google.com/) didn't work on the home page, but here is one of the Insight pages about the development. (http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=en&u=http://www.honda.co.jp/INSIGHT/qa/&sl=ja&tl=en)

Consumption Tax
Paid by consumers when they purchase goods and services. The current rate is 5% (4% national, 1% prefectural). Shops and other service providers are required to include the consumption tax in the prices shown.

I'm glad to see that the base Insight is still under $20k even with the devalued $USD.

I wonder if the LX Insight can be customized at all. If I was to buy a car today, I'd do the base Insight but try to get the upgraded stereo.

So we get a price of ~$18,500 for the LX after the consumption tax is removed? That's to high IMO. The LX needs to come in at $17,000 - $17,500, again IMO.

That seems bang on. The announcement says including tax, but this only means the 5% consumption tax, as you can see from the list it is expensive to own a car in Japan but this extra tax is an onroad tax paid at purchase and then (except for recycle cost) at 3years, 5years, 7 years until sold...

Good Luck

In Yen with no tax, G is 1.8million, L is 1.95million, LS is 2.1047million.
The Yen/dollar rate is at 91Yen/dollar but 105-110 Yen/dollar is more typical and is probably what Honda expects it to return to.

Hi Andrew:

___Given Nevyn and your appraisals of actual base prices of the HCH-II and Insight-II in Japan, I am coming up with the following:

Japan – Base HCH-II in Yen: 2,085,245
Japan – Base Insight-II in Yen: 1,800,000

US – Base HCH-II in $USD: $23,650
US – Base Insight-II in $USD projected: $20,414

___A base Insight-II at $19,995 or above is going to be a failure in my eyes given it is basically a $15,550 Base Fit w/ a new body and IMA attached. The new downsized IMA is not worth $4,500 but more along the lines of $1,500 to $2,000

___I am beginning to worry about the future of Honda’s IMA program. If the Base Insight-II comes in at $20,000 and the Base Prius III comes in at the rumored $22,750, the Prius-III is far and away a better value in terms of size, performance, FE and std. safety equipment over and above the base Insight-II. Let alone the Base Prius-III is better equipped than the EX with a higher level of standard safety equipment. I have to believe Honda knows what it is doing with regards to the base level pricing. I was looking more along the lines of $17 to $18K for the Base which does not appear to be the case in Japan with the currency translations and percentages considered.

___Then again, the base Prius might come in at $24,000 and that is an entirely different level of pricing than a $21,000 or so EX.

___Good Luck

add 670 to that HCH, destination is the same in all locations in the 48 states

I have to agree here, they'd be extremely foolish to start above 20, especially with all the tricks Toyota can pull at that comfortable price point, to make them squirm a bit, it would definitely have to be 17-18

Hello Wayne

As its a dedicated hybrid, it is deliberately set up to make comparison with the Fit difficult. Honda want the comparison with the Prius. The base gen2 Prius w/o Tax is 2.33million Yen so the 0.53million Yen differential should be attractive. My guess is that Honda believes the HCHII is as good as the PII but did not sell well because it was not noticeable as a Hybrid.

Good Luck

Yes but at the price point we're working with and the amount it shares with the Fit does make comparison easier than any full hybrid in years passed.
