Oregon Public Broadcasting:

"It's not a flashy-looking car, it's just a little forgotten economy car from the '70's," says its creator John Wayland.

The Datsun in the next lane is an imposter. It's camouflaged to look ordinary.

"It feels good knowing that I'm not running on foreign oil. You know, I've shown my independence by doing this. And it's good for the air. We've got nice blue skies today and we'd like to keep it that way," says Wayland.

John Wayland's electric car has another secret. Under that unassuming 1972 skin of lurks the power of a race car.

"The White Zombie is right now the world's quickest-accelerating street-legal electric car, period," Wayland exults.

Hi John:

___Excellent vid and find! I wish he was not so much into the speed and drag racing stuff but at least it shows the potential.

___Good Luck

Dang...not enought bandwidth at work for more that a peak during lunch, but that is cool.

I think I'll still give top vid to the electric drag bike that crashed as the rider (designer) wasn't prepared for the wheel to catch & launch him.

His family car is an Insight and he also has another EV for the street. He is the guy that builds the Shoebox subs for the Insight. This hobby quenches his thirst for speed and to show others that you don't have to be burning petroleum to go fast.

Hm. The file seems to have gone missing on the server. Too bad; I really wanted to see it!

Hmmm. I just pulled it up again and it started to play. Try again.

Nope. Still no joy. I get this:

Stream not found: ofg/segments/electric_drag_racing.flv

Perhaps you have it cached?

I watched it with Firefox this morning. I just tried it with IE, Chrome, and Safari (for windows) and they all found and played it. Safari was VERY slow though.

Maybe your bandwith is being squeezed at work. My son is having trouble with his broadband playing youtube video's and he filed a complaint with the FCC.

Well, I just got it to work at home -- cool!

I spied that Insight on a flatbed in the background. Blue, too. :D

I'm not sure why I couldn't see it at work -- I run through a proxy at my house so I should be able to get anything I can get here.

I think the value comes specifically from the fact that he's into speed and drag racing. Those are the people you have to work hardest to convert.

This link reveals (http://www.electrifyingtimes.com/wayland.html)some more info about his mission and his background.

This lin (http://www.evalbum.com/210)k lists his vehicles and the third pic down shows that he is a hypermiler.

The last time I talked to him, he didn't like driving the Insight around town. He would drive one of his EV's because the Insight uses gas.

Thanks, I knew about the subs and wondered if he was the same guy.

I had no problems whatsoever viewing it with Safari (not being very computer-savvy, I use Safari all the time).

I just edited some of the dialog into the OP.

Now that is having your Cake and eating it too! Go fast, go slow but still no gas to show.

I used to go to the US NHRA Nationals in Indy and rumble for 4 days of drag racing, getting covered with a nasty rubber and nitro film. Still enjoy catching drag racing on ESPN once in awhile. The electric drag bike was really sweet! It really impresses the gear heads with the amount of torgue an electric vehicle has.
