I've been understanding that the Tax Credit was only good for a purchase date and not when the order was placed. I've read two articles today that say Ford is claiming you can get the full tax credit if you order one before March 31, 2009. Anyone with information that can confirm what this article is saying?

"These Ford Motor Company hybrids, along with the Escape and Mariner hybrid SUVs, are eligible for full tax credits if purchased or ordered before March 31st. After that time, the credits are reduced by 50 percent due to Ford crossing the 60,000-vehicle threshold that begins a scale-down process for tax credits."

March 31 is the correct date, since they sold #60000 in Q4 2008, but I also thought there had to be a sale, not merely an order. Not sure, however. But all of the instructions refer to purchase date. I just haven't seen a discussion of what purchase means in this context.

Hi Gary:

___The following should help...

Ford hybrid tax credit: Now you see it, now you don't. (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/uptospeed/2009/01/ford-tax-credit.html)

"The date of purchase determines the amount of the credit available for a vehicle, i.e. whether a vehicle is eligible for the full credit or whether a portion of the credit is phased-out. The placed in service date determines the taxable year in which the credit may be claimed."

So Ford is saying an order w/ deposit works, but the law firm seems skeptical. The buyer needs to have the benefits and burdens of ownership prior to 3/31. Don't expect Ford to stand behind your tax return credit percentage.
