View Full Version : Week of January 26th - February 1st (Nat Avg $1.85)
Right Lane Cruiser 01-26-2009, 06:24 AM Happy Monday, all!
I know it doesn't look all that impressive but this is the lowest temperature I've ever exceeded EPA combined. :)
-12F (-23F windchill), 5mph headwind from the SW, clear:
64.3mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 69.7mpg over 823.8mi with 3 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Hopefully I can wrestle that back over 70mpg with the trip home today...
Chuck 01-26-2009, 06:29 AM 87.1mpg at 43F
Kacey Green 01-26-2009, 06:47 AM Insights battle the winter, some more favorably than others ;)
laurieaw 01-26-2009, 07:41 AM sean, ya can't control the weather. good job.
i discovered that my power windows aren't like this below zero stuff much. trying to get onto the highway i discovered that there was more frost on the window than i thought, so i tried to lower it for better sight.......barely went down, and almost couldn't close it again. yikes, i won't do that again.
somewhere around 42 this morning, i was too tired to remember to look at it.
supposedly our cold wave will break today......i am keeping my fingers crossed.
PaleMelanesian 01-26-2009, 08:39 AM 40F here, and I got 62.0 mpg this morning.
Tank average is up to 60.4 / 388 miles and just over 1/2 tank.
Aether glider 01-26-2009, 08:45 AM 29F this morning
Xterra got 25.9 MPG : 33 miles
Tank is at 26.7 MPG after 80 miles.
JusBringIt 01-26-2009, 11:53 AM 11.4mi, 20.3mpg
into work this morning. I have to guess and it was about 10 degF. This reminds me I have to go switch batteries, the one that I put in isn't exactly in the best condition.
Aether glider 01-26-2009, 04:17 PM Xterra again:
41F, 28.3 MPG on the way home
avg for today : 26.5 MPG
Right Lane Cruiser 01-26-2009, 04:57 PM It was a tough drive home. I couldn't bring the day average up to 70mpg, but I did manage to undo some of the damage to the tank average.
4F (-9F windchill), 8mph cross/headwind from the W, partly sunny:
72.6mpg for 22.3mi (Work to home)
The tank average is back up to 70.0mpg over 846.1mi with 2 of 20 bars left on the fuel gauge.
Day Total: 68.1mpg over 45.0mi
Here's hoping I can keep that tank average at or above 70mpg tomorrow! I'm going to have to fill up after the commute home. No pushing the boundaries when hypothermia is a possible outcome!
JusBringIt 01-26-2009, 05:56 PM 37.5mpg 10.5mi work to home. Filled up today and certainly better than before
416.2mi and 31.5mpg. Hopefully I can keep this up. I did change my battery out and can keep it topped off at work. Here's to tanks above 30 for the rest of winter!
Kacey Green 01-26-2009, 08:25 PM 56 and change this morning
down to 54 at lunch
71.0 from lunch back to work
67.9 in a 2003 Insight we took in on trade (my first time in an Insight classic, so I only used these techniques, 3LO, lightfoot, driving below Max PSL, and light timing (poorly hit all of them.)
57.0 on the way home
Tank up to the mid 55s
Kacey Green 01-26-2009, 08:25 PM the Insight was a CVT not 5MT
Right Lane Cruiser 01-26-2009, 10:02 PM Kacey, just so you know what that thing is worth in decent weather... I gave a clinic to a fellow in a red '06 CVT Insight and he managed 87mpg with my coaching. He wasn't paying very good attention, actually... ;)
Right Lane Cruiser 01-27-2009, 06:23 AM I was hoping the trip in today would go as smoothly as yesterday... but it didn't. :p I got better mileage but not by much.
-6F, 4mph headwind from the S, clear:
66.0mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 69.7mpg over 868.9mi with 1 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Chuck 01-27-2009, 06:27 AM 64mpg at 35F in heavy fog, drizzle - sleepwalking.
81mpg at 35F in similar conditions 3 hours later.
laurieaw 01-27-2009, 08:01 AM non scientific study on what days of below zero can do to your FE:

PaleMelanesian 01-27-2009, 08:53 AM Wow. Sorry, Laurie.
I actually beat Sean's mileage this morning! 70.5 mpg at 50 degrees and misty. Tonight the bottom drops out and we're below freezing again.
Aether glider 01-27-2009, 09:04 AM 35F, Light rain
Xterra: 25.9 MPG : 32 miles
Tank is at 26.3 MPG after ~150 miles
Kacey Green 01-27-2009, 09:05 AM Kacey, just so you know what that thing is worth in decent weather... I gave a clinic to a fellow in a red '06 CVT Insight and he managed 87mpg with my coaching. He wasn't paying very good attention, actually... ;)
Nor was I :( I called Wayne to find the seat-back lever, halfway through and I was finally comfortable.
Skwyre7 01-27-2009, 09:08 AM 38.7 MPG this morning with one passenger. Bad weather was rolling in, but nothing was falling yet. I guess everyone wanted to get to work fast so they wouldn't have to drive in the freezing rain. I got tailgated more today than I have in the past month. :eek: I was also cut off a couple times, and not just by those who were tired of tailgating me. {shakes head in disgust}
Aether glider 01-27-2009, 09:10 AM Nor was I :( I called Wayne to find the seat-back lever, halfway through and I was finally comfortable.
What are you guys asking for that insight. My boss is looking for a CVT Hybrid.

I'll pass it along to my boss thanks for the link!

JusBringIt 01-27-2009, 11:42 AM 11.4mi 27.5mpg in this morning 13 degF, windchill is 4degF.
I need to dress warmer, slowly I seem to have started wearing less layers. Just filled up last night for 31.5mpg. Hope I can beat that this time around. That battery didn't charge like I thought it would, I'm trying again today. Hopefully it works this time.
Aether glider 01-27-2009, 04:34 PM 50F, no rain
Xterra: 30.1 MPG : 33 Miles
Today's Avg : 27.0 MPG
Tank is at 26.7 MPG
Right Lane Cruiser 01-27-2009, 04:36 PM Well, that hurt. Laurie, I have now joined with my worst tank ever. :ccry:
I did what I could on the way to the gas station but it wasn't enough because the FCD was optimistic. The extra cold might have a little to do with that.
10F (0F windchill), 6mph crosswind from the SW, cloudy:
79.9mpg for 24.9mi (Work to Costco)
83.4mpg for 2.4mi (Costco to home)
The tank ended up at 70.0mpg on the FCD but only 68.469mpg over 893.8mi. :ccry:
Day Total: 73.1mpg over 50.1mi
diamondlarry 01-27-2009, 04:44 PM I was hoping the trip in today would go as smoothly as yesterday... but it didn't. :p I got better mileage but not by much.

66.0mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 69.7mpg over 868.9mi with 1 of 20 bars remaining on the fuel gauge.
Ooh! I beat Sean again! Ok, it was over twice as warm here as it was there but I have to take what I can get.:p I'm sure he will blow me away with his trip home though.:D
I had 9F this morning with winds <5mph from? This afternoon, it was up to 22F with winds from the NE@ 5-10mph.
1. 68.4-11.0(home to work)
2. 72.5-11.0(work to home)
Average for today was 70.4.
Kacey Green 01-27-2009, 05:06 PM 71 on the way to my parents place
61 on the way to work
JusBringIt 01-27-2009, 07:49 PM 10.6mi work to home, 41.5mpg. Less traffic and temps up to 24F. Is this what warmer weather and a bit less traffic does?? If so, can I have another serving please?
Day total is 32.6mpg. Tank is up to 32.5mpg over 22.5miles.
Chuck 01-27-2009, 09:15 PM 80.8mpg going home at lunch.
Tomorrow at 6am there will probably be a quarter-inch of ice all over Dallas and too many people going over 40
Kacey Green 01-27-2009, 11:00 PM 52.? from work to Dad's
64.0 from Dad's to My House
Kacey Green 01-28-2009, 05:12 AM Today will be fun, lake wind advisory from now 'till 8pm, in the wrong direction tonight if I read it right. Most of the trip in it'll be a crosswind but for the last 3 mile or or so it'll be a tailwind, again if I read it right.

Stay at home today.
Kacey Green 01-28-2009, 06:20 AM Headed out the door now
Edit:
sorry wrong subforum, lets see what kind of FE this "heat wave" will give and what the winds will take away
Right Lane Cruiser 01-28-2009, 06:24 AM Blech. Another recal. :( I'm starting to get concerned. That's 3 this month. It seems the pack hasn't been the same since it was deep discharged several times back in June. :(
Maybe I'll try a 12V disconnect to see if that helps at all.
-3F (-14F windchill), 6mph headwind from the SSE, clear:
64.6mpg for 22.6mi (Home to work)
The tank is down to 66.0mpg over 25.1mi
Kacey Green 01-28-2009, 07:17 AM @ McDonald's now
64 MPG
Found that if someone passes you w/o signaling, shif to the edge of your lane closest to them, much less likely to come in too close.
63.1 now that I've completed the drive through.
Conditions:
No wind Foggy and moist road surfaces. This car does great @ ~55 degrees and foggy, thrid time I've noticed this.

JusBringIt 01-28-2009, 07:29 AM snow, sleet, slushy rds 16F. Traffic was at a crawl, or in the ditch (Santa Fe).
11.3mi 24.6mpg. Tank is down to 29.4mpg over 33.9mi. Hopefully I can improve that going home. I need to stay above that 30mpg threshold.
Kacey Green 01-28-2009, 07:30 AM 62.9 in parking lot now.
Thank up to 56.1 mpg @ 570.7 miles

PaleMelanesian 01-28-2009, 07:54 AM It was icy here this morning, but my route was clear. Others at work are reporting cars in the ditch. I was careful and didn't do some things I normally do. :o 51.5 mpg.
My tank is down to 60.2 mpg / 432 miles and just below 1/2.
laurieaw 01-28-2009, 08:02 AM discovered why the car did such a lousy job yesterday. right front tire was FLAT. i limped into town and filled it. seemed to hold on the way to work, but i will go get it checked later. i have to go for my pre-op check today, so i will be out running around anyhow.
then, because the tire thing held me up, the rest of the commute had more traffic than i usually see...after getting stuck behind a school bus for a while. drive 1/4 mile, stop...drive 1/4 mile, stop......rinse/repear
Aether glider 01-28-2009, 09:03 AM Its 37F and raining here so they canceled classes at my son's preschool  I guess someone didn't want to get wet.
Kacey Green 01-29-2009, 04:54 AM 55.? last night, had to fight and scrape just to get that, the car wouldn't FAS, EV Glide, or even SAHM like normal, I'm assuming it was the headwind the weather service warned about yesterday morning.
Today I won't be commuting on my normal route or schedule, we'll see what the excursion provides. (my trip, not a ford truck)
Right Lane Cruiser 01-29-2009, 06:39 AM Last night was interesting. I'm redoing the software on my laptop so I didn't get around to posting but here's what went on:
16F (5F windchill), 8mph tail/crosswind from the S, cloudy:
80.8mpg for 22.2mi (Work to home)
13F, 4mph headwind from the SW, cloudy:
70.0mpg for 17.1mi (Home to Church)
13F, no wind, light snow with slush roads:
72.6mpg for 17.2mi (Church to home)
Day Total: 71.4mpg over 79.3mi
This morning... 16F (2F windchill), 13mph tail/crosswind from the WNW, slushy roads:
71.2mpg for 22.7mi (Home to work)
The tank is up to 71.6mpg over 104.5mi with all 20 bars on the fuel gauge.
Since I couldn't stuff it at all I won't go nearly as far on that first bar...
Chuck 01-29-2009, 06:53 AM 80.3F at 26F going around the High-Five iced up.
JusBringIt 01-29-2009, 07:02 AM 11.3mi 28.0mpg, I was running around a lot yesterday. A lot was happening, I'll get back to being quite active this afternoon.
laurieaw 01-29-2009, 07:36 AM woo woo. above zero. which doesn't explain why my office is still colder than a meat locker.
53 something, i forgot to write it down.
PaleMelanesian 01-29-2009, 08:09 AM 29F here, 60.5 mpg. That's my coldest 60+ mpg trip, by a whole 1 degree!
Last night was 54 mpg in warmer weather. :( That brought the tank down below 60, to 59.7. This morning didn't change that.
Right Lane Cruiser 01-29-2009, 08:22 AM Don't give up, Andrew! If you can hit 65mpg on your next trip that should pull it back up. :)
PaleMelanesian 01-29-2009, 08:25 AM Thanks, Sean. I know that. It's just discouraging how much MORE a low segment affects the average than a high segment. For an example, to average 60, with a first segment of 50 (10 below), you have to do 75 (15 above) to reach that 60 average. :(
On a more positive note, it looks like we're past the coldest point of winter. This is yours, Sean: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/daily/55407?climoMonth=1&x=25&y=10 Mine looks similar, only about 20 degrees warmer.
Hmmm... looking at this, it seems that my winter has been close to average, but yours has been colder than average. Bummer!
Right Lane Cruiser 01-29-2009, 08:29 AM Yeah, it's been kinda frigid here recently. Hence my poor performance on the tank I just finished Tuesday.
I certainly hope we are past the coldest part! I need to pull my lifetime average back up over 90mpg now. :(
Aether glider 01-29-2009, 10:32 AM 27F this moring
Xterra : 26.3 MPG : 35 miles
Tank is at 26.6 MPG after 209 miles
PaleMelanesian 01-29-2009, 01:39 PM Crazy lunch. Went to get my car inspected. Took out the grill block to avoid any questions.
First place had broken equipment.
2nd place was closed for lunch 11:30 - 1:30.
3rd place didn't have any window stickers.
4th place was busy, but did it.
With all that in-town running around, I got 49.0 mpg / 9.2 miles going there.
Coming back, 56.4 mpg / 7 miles. Then I find out the guy left my lights on, and they were dragging down my mileage and voltage the whole way.
I like my grill block. Water temp maxed out at 152, with about 45 degree ambient.
Tank down from 59.7 to 59.4 mpg. :(
Aether glider 01-29-2009, 02:27 PM Just went ouside during my break and its warming up! I feel a 30+ mpg commute home!
JusBringIt 01-29-2009, 06:09 PM 10.7mi 38.0mpg home today. My tank had reset so I don't know what this is at really. The sg says 27.3mpg over the last 77 miles which I can understand My odo is at 146miles so...

PaleMelanesian 01-30-2009, 08:20 AM Wow, chuck. 90 mpg and below freezing?
I got 61.1 home last night, then 55.1 this morning. Frost was forming as I drove, and messed with my timing and technique.

Kacey Green 02-01-2009, 11:13 AM All week I've been moving as far to the left in my lane when someone goes from tailgating me to passing w/o a signal, not once has one cut back in too soon. In fact some of them put a reasonable amount of space between the sides of our vehicles (probably b/c I go over quick as if I was changing to their lane w/o signaling but stop at the dashed line) they also give 2 to 3 car lengths before coming back into my lane (I go back to RR after they've crossed my front bumper.
Aether glider 02-01-2009, 01:27 PM 62F today (awesome weather)
80.6 MPG : 40 miles :) :) Summer can't get here soon enough!
Right Lane Cruiser 02-01-2009, 07:37 PM Dude! I am so jealous! We had a heat wave yesterday and actually got up to 46F, but the temp has dropped right back down again. :p
Kacey Green 02-01-2009, 10:00 PM a whopping 40.6 round trip (6 miles) to the local wally world (I know its not popular but it was the only one stop shop open at this time
I also though of a name for my HCHII:
My first two cars had names, and up 'till today none of the next three did.
The first, The Beast a '98 Mazda MPV All-Sport, I hypermiled this bad boy up to 18mpg once, this car introduced me to hypermiling and driving.
Second, Ungrateful B**** a '92 Lincoln Continental ES, My Grandfather gave this car to me. Every time I filled this car to first click it would break down and strand me, when grandpa and I finally got this car running for the last time, it started smoking. (I was working at the Acura/Toyota store at this time and had just started college) I traded it in for my next car.
Until my current car got its name it was nameless. FLH 00 Conventional This was a great car, and the only reason I traded it was because my fourth car showed up at the Toyota store 10 months into its journey with me. This car also taught me first-hand about negative equity, and is the very reason I urge people not to trade out too soon. Hypermiling acheivements include best tank ever 63.9 MPG lmpg of 40, not bad considering I still didn't know what I was doing and I'd only ever run FL's 10% Ethy garbage through her.
My fourth car also nameless before today, FLH 01 HSD This was my first hybrid and considering my main reason for coming to the Toyota store was the Prius and I'd already founded the Gainesville Hybrid Club (http://www.flhybrid.com) it only made sense (at the time) to own a hybrid. Achievements with this car, finally became a real hypermiler (instant feedback really helped) LMPG of 52 MPG over the two years we traveled together. As soon as I took delivery of this car my participation at Priuschat started dropping quickly and I re-acquainted myself w/ CleanMPG (remember it was the hows and whys that got an 18 year old with a massive vehicle his first 18 MPG tank and a 63.9mpg tank in a 2003 Civic LX). This 2004 Toyota Prius package #9 (package BC) was faithful, the only problems it ever gave me were a squealing thermos in cold weather and four flat tires all on the passenger side, and it spit gas at me about 3 times. Achievements include consistent 70 mpg tanks, several times maxing out the histogram at 99.9. I got this car with about 20k miles and traded her at just under 80k miles. Her last tank was 68.2 MPG
'09 HCHII HYBLN, This was my first new car and got its name today, I ordered her in July, I never came across the car I ordered, our ordering manager was able to secure an Identical car somehow, we first met as soon as the driver had her off the back of the truck (3 miles on the odo), three easy starts on the traditional starter before she was PDIed. After an extensive "test drive" and trying to find gas for a first fill in a city with little to no $5 gas was less than fun, thankfully our supply was coming back online at this point. Achievements to date have all been chronicled here at CleanMPG. We'll call it MH 02 IMA *
Kacey Green 02-01-2009, 10:05 PM FLH 00 Conventional: 2003 Honda Civic LX Sedan, FLHybrid unit 00 traditional gasser
FLH 01 HSD: 2004 Toyota Prius Package 9, FLHybrid unit 01 Hybrid Synergy Drive power plant
MH 02 I-M-A*: 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid Leather and Navi, Midlands Hybrid unit 02 Integrated Motor Assist power plant the star sigifies this is a replacement for a unit lost in production just like on US currency serial numbers.
JusBringIt 02-01-2009, 10:11 PM ahh..30 deg. 32.1mpg 16.5mi apt to my parents house
16.6mi, parents to apt....*Drum roll* 44.1mpg! This is sweet. I went outside without a jacket on because I was sweating wearing mine!
I absolutely cannot wait for summer. This is gonna be fantastic. Tank avg is up to 30.5 over 240?miles.
