Ray LaHood, President Barack Obama's choice to head the Department of Transportation, said Wednesday that Obama is "not going to have to push me very hard" to raise fuel economy standards for cars and trucks.
LaHood told senators he would "do everything I can" to meet an April 1 deadline to adopt higher standards that would take effect 18 months later for 2011 model vehicles.
During a confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee, LaHood said tougher rules would help U.S. automakers "get in the game here, with the reality that they need to be producing American cars that get much better standards."
