Thanks for all your hard work on this Wayne, looks great! I would definitely consider this car if I was in the market right now and the price was competitive in Canada.

I'm definitely looking towards this for my next car. I like the fact that the rear is taken almost directly from the Insight. Awesome review Wayne!

I would have to get the EX version.. I need cruise control.

I wonder what the underbody looks like? I know the Insight1 has a lot of aluminum on the bottom.

But I'm wondering how this new model is going to hold up to road salt??
(My 1999 Honda CRV isn't doing real well).

misprint??

Coolant should be 5.3 qts vs gallons? My 3.4 liter Tacoma only holds 10.5 qts of coolant.

Am I the only one who doesn't think this is progress here?

I mean sure, the Insight-II will cost thousands less than the Prius-III. The Prius-III will probably hit 50 mpg city this time around but even so being 10 mpg less the Insight-II will have the cost advantage.

But for how long?????

Of the 10 or so hybrids to be offered within a few years I'd bet on seeing a hybrid Corolla and a hybrid next generation Yaris/Scion clone. So a 50+ mpg hatch vs the 40 mpg Insight-II for the same price????

Um Honda might reign supreme for a year but looks like unless Toyota pulls out a lower FE Prius-III then Toyota will once again rule the hybrid world by 2011-2012.

Honda = FAIL

Temperature control ?
That is a lot of weight, but maybe they are doing something different with the ICE, E-motor, E-motor-controller heat management and cabin heating?

The new 2010 Prius has made a ton of changes in those areas.
It doesn't have any belts under the hood..

Or, maybe they made a mistake in the metric conversion? :confused:

If NASA can mess up conversions, we should forgive Honda the same error... If it uses more than 5.3 qts, they are doing something new with it. 21.2 qts is alot. Hope it doesn't require 30M/24month changes...

Not a fan of the interior -- looks too busy for me. Other than that, sounds like a very nice car. If I had to buy, I'd probably take it over the HCH-II or Prius III.

I just managed to crank out this video of an Insight II cut-away exhibited at the auto show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF-4gMPFm1U

I'll have a few more uploaded to youtube and maybe I'll manage to crank the quality up a notch or two.

Cheers;

Hi msantos;
You have been very silent! Do you think this is a going to be a threat too the Prius? If the price is in the teens it may be a good seller, but I have to see this too believe it. It is hard to get a Fit for under $20,000 here in Canada so I really cannot see this happening with the new Inshight,:(
Cheers Hal

Hi Harold;

I still have a few more videos to upload to YouTube not only about the Insight but also about other cars (namely the Gen 3 Prius).
Yes, I have been a bit silent mainly because I been busy with other things while also tagging along with the rest of the crew in Detroit.

Here are my thoughts on the 2010 Insight:
As it was mentioned before, the HI-II is not a direct competitor to the Prius. Not by a long shot. Not in terms of size, price and market, appointments, technology and performance. For most people, the Insight will be best entry price point into a hybrid vehicle. It remains to be seen if the Prius will be as cheap as the current Gen 2 but all indications is that it may be more expensive particularly for its higher trim configurations.
As Honda stated many times before, the HCH will continue to be the flagship model for Honda hybrids. As usual, any significant improvement to IMA will be realized on the flagship product and the new Insight does not violate this rule. Unlike the original Insight, the new HI-II is no longer a halo car. It is instead the champion hybrid in terms of affordability for the masses.
On the account of the previous point, the HI-II IMA implementation did not add anything to what we already have in the HCH-II (in fact it lost quite a bit). The loss, is very significant in several areas, especially those that matter to me. AC Hybrid scroll compressor with Electric only operation is gone, smaller battery pack, less powerful motor, finish and trim as well as other over engineered attributes that naturally make a car more expensive are gone too.I too want to see how they are going to price the Hi-II in Canada. The car does get better FE but it is even smaller than the FIT in some areas (rear passenger room is good only for children and smaller adults). For a family with small kids, the car is great but place someone tall back there and they'll ask you to be let out in no time.

As it stands, the HI-II is not for me and the HCH-II is still a better and more sophisticated hybrid vehicle which will prompt me to hold on to mine at least until the new one arrives to our shores in 2010.

Cheers;

MSantos

Thanks msantos. Maybe they will put a hatch or a wagon back on the 2010 HCH as a option. H:)

Please note that the model in the following photos is 6'5".

At the 2009 NAIAS Honda had a 2010 Insight II display with half the body removed for design and construction inspection.

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/591/2010_Insight_II_Sean_tucked.JPGManuel and I viewed the 2010 Honda Insight II in the same perspective.http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/591/2010_Insight_II_Sean_comfortable.JPG

It will be a fine car in it's niche in the automotive world as it has room for 4 people unlike the original, but the occupants in the rear will be size constrained.

The constraint will be further limited by the position of the front seat. Note that in the first picture, the driver's seat is adjusted all of the way back. In the second picture, the passenger seat is adjusted forward.

In the first picture, his head is against the roof. In the second picture, his head is extended above the roof 3".

Can you clarify a couple of the pics?

In the first one, is the drivers seat all the way back? Is he leaning his heads down because it is touching the roof?

In the second picture, is the passenger seat scooted all the way up?

Are the front seats basically Civic seats in all dimensions? I always thought the front seat bottom was really short on the current iteration of Civic. Almost like sitting on a bench.

Just trying to get perspective.
Thanks.

Yes, the driver's seat was all the way back (from me sitting in it ;)) and I did have my head against the headliner.

I believe the passenger side seat was all the way forward but I didn't move it so I can't be sure.

As for the seat bottom, I haven't been in too many current gen Civics but it felt similar to my memory of the HCH-II I drove last February. Everything feels like a bench to me because my knees stick up. ;)

For a slightly different perspective, have a look at the bottom of Wayne's review (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18649) to see his positions in the front and rear. He is a tad over 6'1" and has a 34" inseam (mine is 36"). You can see the seat bottom in the first one while he is posing behind the steering wheel. The next one has his knees in the back of that driver's seat, but he had it one click forward from furthest travel rearward.

I hope that helps!

RLC,

Thanks for clarifying. I guess I'll just need to delay my opinion of the car until I can sit in and drive one this spring.

Since I'm only 5'9" with a 29.5 inch inseam it looks like they built the car for me!

Thoughts on adding a "Pricing" section to the Auto-Info pages?

Yeah, that's my sticking point, too - although for me, it's not the busy-ness, it just looks too much like some space ship or something. I didn't like digital gauges in American cars years back and don't like them any better in Hondas which seem to have been using 'em of late.

Other than that, I love the profile - I always liked the fastback look and this one does a good job of it. Should be a nice car.
