A while back someone posted (Tom?) about mantaining 120 mpg. A couple of days ago I needed to run south to Pendleton, OR. My 2005 Insight seems to love hot weather. I employed all the tricks I know (except truck drafting, I hate rock chips on the hood) and finished the trip with 120.6 mpg over 120.8 miles.
On this freeway route there is a long, 8 mile climb. In order to NOT use assist, I ascended the hill in 3rd gear, at 44 mph. Therefore, at the top of the hill I still had a full SOC and then just shut the engine off for the descent (FAS). This is an example of the value of lots of air in the tires -- the car really rolls a LONG way.....
Ambient temp: 95F. Wind: calm. Tires: 55 psi Roadway: 4 lane freeway, mostly concrete, some asphalt sections. Traffic: very light, no problems Speed: between 43 and 56, depending on slope/grade. Techniques: FAS, DWL, DWB, patience, stocking feet, and being extremely gentle on the gas pedal.
