A work van capable of beating the HCH-II on the 08 EPA? (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=176848)

2009 Peugeot Bipper – It will not win any races but this compact and very capable mini work van will save copious amounts of fuel over its lifetime.

In early December, a jury of 33 automotive journalists presented the 12th annual European “Van of the Year” award to the Peugeot Bipper.

This compact utilitarian work van with a cargo volume of just under 100 cu.-ft. and a payload of almost 3,000 pounds convinced the jurors that the Bipper best meets the needs of the working professional.

Besides its utility, its fuel economy on the NEDC of 52.3 mpgUS combined (~ 43 mpgUS on the 08 EPA combined) from its 1.4L HDI turbo-diesel engine attracted special attention from the jurors.

The Peugeot BIPPER, produced in Bursa (Turkey), was launched commercially in December 2007 as a panel van. Today it is now available in most European markets in a variety of customizable configurations.

This vehicle previously received recognition as the 2009 "International Van of the Year" at the 62nd International Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover, Germany this past September. That award was judged by journalists representing 20 European countries.

Kind of a cool looking little truck. Now if someone would only develop an open box mini truck with that 3k lb capacity that gets 40+ mpg, I'd be into a new vehicle!

In case you missed the point... I NEED A FE PICKUP!!

Of course, then it has to be available in the US. Probably never happen.

I love the name. "Bipper" is absolutely perfect for a vehicle like that.

I am using my '98 Honda Odyssey for a work vehicle. I geet between 28 to 30 mpg depending on how heavy it is loaded and how fast I drive. It sure is cheaper than the diesel pickup with a camper shell that I was driving. (but it won't haul as much)
Why do they charge about $1.00 a gallon more for diesel? BECAUSE THEY CAN

If only we had smart car makers here in America. But, due to poor education and
a generally lower IQ (caused by teacher's unions?), we will never have really
good vehicles made here in the USA.. :(

Well, that is until we get our very own Prius factories!!! :Banane57:

Happy New Year!!!

It looks well designed and has plenty of weight capacity for most all lighter duty jobs. What is missing though is interior volume, extending another foot or two would do wonders for the flexibility and have minimal impact on FE.

The Ford Transit Connect is a little bigger, but similar, and coming to NA.

They did a taxicab concept of it which was very cool, but I haven't heard if it's slated for production or not.

Another European high MPG vehicle we will never see?

The big .003 and the oil industry have worked with their various lobbyists and our honorable elected officials for decades to keep "this sort of thing" out of here. And they have been very successful, don't you think?

I think it to be singularly the most un-American thing any American company has done in the 20th century. Why did they do it?
