View Full Version : Is anyone interested in my HCH 1
laurieaw 12-26-2008, 11:53 AM i am seriously considering purchasing a new forester. the road conditions i deal with getting out of my house in the morning are difficult with the HCH, and since i am now a lot closer to work, i can afford (i think) to lose a little in FE and gain some in security.
5 speed 85,000 miles, almost new bridgestone 381s, snow tires, engine block heater...everyone knows it's history.
Mr. Pancake 12-26-2008, 12:21 PM How much for the civic?
laurieaw 12-26-2008, 12:41 PM How much for the civic?
$13,000
abcdpeterson 12-26-2008, 12:52 PM I wish I could pick it up. I will ask around.
Good idea on the Subaru. My Wife has her 2nd Subaru now, it’s a 2000 Forester.
She Loves it, and it the BEST for getting around snow or anything slippery.
I would say it is better in the snow then my computer controlled all wheel drive Mazda Tribute. (and the Tribute is better than the Jeeps I have had)
She doesn’t log her mileage but she resets the trip odometer when she fills so I can have a chance to check.
She gets 25-29.
Lots of small trips (getting groceries and kids) those tanks usually end up around the 25mpg mark.
Her highway diving is city highway and about 20 miles at best. More of those she gets closer to the 29mpg point.
Her Forester is an auto. She is light on the gas, but she is not hypermiling. if you can find one with a manual!! I bet upper 30’s for MPG should be in order.

That sounds right. and I am betting yours is "Excellent" Or BETTER condition.
Kelly Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/PricingReport.aspx?YearId=2005&VehicleClass=UsedCar&ManufacturerId=18&Condition=Excellent&ModelId=123&PriceType=Retail&VehicleId=899&Mileage=85000&SelectionHistory=899%7C29709%7C55123%7C0%7C0%7C#survey) is right at that price
brick 12-26-2008, 01:46 PM If I were looking, your car would be at the top of my list! There's no better way to buy a used hybrid than from an extremely experienced hypermiler such as Laurie.
The Subie should treat you well if you go that route. Can you get a Forrester with a stick-shift?

Actually, that's a bit pricey. Private seller price is $10,540.

Hi Mr. Pancake;
Laurie is not your average "Private seller" and for many of us that implies that her car was treated far better than your average HCH is.
To be truly fair: Even if the market value was indeed $10.5K Laurie's HCH would have to fetch a bit more.
Cheers;

Right Lane Cruiser 12-26-2008, 05:10 PM I can personally vouch for what Manuel just stated.
diamondlarry 12-26-2008, 05:27 PM I too have seen this vehicle and can say that it is not your average vehicle but is in better condition than that.
Mr. Pancake 12-26-2008, 05:59 PM I'm sure her car is in great condition, but if you'll notice on the kelly blue book page the price I stated is for "excellent" condition which the site notes is less than 5% of vehicles.
laurieaw 12-26-2008, 06:00 PM ok, guys. as much as i love the subaru, at my age, i was just not willing to enter into another long finance plan. thanks for your vote of confidence in my car, i do feel it's an exceptional vehicle.
i did, however, purchase something at the dealership. i am going to start a new thread as soon as i get some photos....
they did have a couple of manual vehicles, one was a 2009. they are selling them so cheap that i was sure that my car wouldn't have been worth what it's really worth on a trade.
interesting, they did have a very low emissions subaru on the lot.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-26-2008, 07:37 PM Mr. Pancake, it is an unfortunate fact that generic ratings are often based on measures which do not take into account special attributes of a vehicle. An example is the amount I paid for my Insight. The bank refused to offer a loan for the full amount I secured the vehicle because it wasn't "worth" that much based on age, miles, etc. The bank had no way of taking into account the relative rarity of the vehicle or the demand caused by a run up in fuel prices. Likewise, Laurie's car is an exceptional performer (for whatever reason) and we know that Laurie's driving habits have ensured exceptionally light wear on the mechanical as well as the battery components of the vehicle.
For the average person looking at vehicles, no it wouldn't be worth the asking price she put on it. For those who know exactly what it is they are looking for, this car is in better than "excellent" condition in spite of the number of miles. This is similar to knowing that a vehicle that has mostly highway miles on it will be in better condition internally than one with the same amount of miles accumulated in short distance city driving.
Congratulations on a good purchase, Laurie! I know that you would have missed the HCH and that this truck will be an excellent solution for your occasional use. Money well spent in my book!
Chuck 12-26-2008, 07:47 PM I'd agree that the "real age" of Laurie's HCH I is less then the chronological age. ;)

hopefully that's true of the driver, also. :p
Chuck 12-26-2008, 08:55 PM hopefully that's true of the driver, also. :pDid you know you can spend 10 minutes at www.realage.com (http://www.realage.com)? Of course, you will get emailed about 3x a week with soft spam. ;) It does have excellent advise on living as healthy as possible. Questionaire is THOURGH: have your meds and vitamins handy.
Ten years ago I snapped my right ACL skiiing - I was JOTD - seriously. Very icy conditions, steep slope, 30mph on untuned skis....caught a snag and might as well had a rope tied to my right leg...felt the snap. Hope it's a long time before it affects my driving and walking.
bomber991 12-27-2008, 03:03 AM Oh no I think I got to this thread too late, but you can't bump start without getting a CEL in the newer subarus.
They switched to drive-by-wire, and at least with my brothers 2007 impreza, when he bump starts he always gets a CEL that comes up with a code that means something like "not enough voltage to starter".
