View Full Version : Suggestion: % of EPA mileage
Prius Envy 12-25-2008, 11:58 AM I really like the mileage log section of the site.
One thing I'd like to see on the main list is the % of EPA mileage for each vehicle. I'd like to be able to have the list sorted based on this instead of on the raw mileage.
I'm more interested in seeing who's getting the best mileage improvement out of the vehicles they're driving than I am in seeing a list of who's driving Hondas. :)
Right Lane Cruiser 12-25-2008, 04:18 PM It is in the process of being implemented but will take a while as the value isn't currently stored in the database.
I'm glad you find it useful!
Prius Envy 12-27-2008, 05:00 AM Excellent, thanks!
Right Lane Cruiser 12-27-2008, 11:25 PM Have a look now. ;)
SentraSE-R 12-28-2008, 08:04 AM Very nice, Sean. All the information is there, although it's still sorted by mileage, and not by % of EPA
Right Lane Cruiser 12-28-2008, 12:34 PM You can click the headings in the title bar to sort via whichever column suits your fancy. The name link will sort one direction and the image link just to its right will sort the other direction.
Enjoy!
phoebeisis 12-28-2008, 01:34 PM I'm waaaaay too lazy to attempt to prove it, but maybe taking a look at the numbers might "prove it".
I'm reasonably certain that Honda buyers/drivers on average are more committed to performance-all types of performance- than Toyota drivers. So, HCH 2 drivers should get a higher percentage of EPA than Prius drivers. EPA combined is 42 vs 46 HCH 2 vs Prius. Honda drivers on the other site didn't like to hear my idea because they were convinced that the HCH 2 was inherently just as good in respect to mpg as the Prius.
Honda buyers frequently love their car; Prius buyers see their vehicle as a high mpg appliance.

SentraSE-R 12-28-2008, 06:27 PM I sorted the mileage logs by % of EPA, and the top two in the gas vehicles group fudged their figures. The leading Subaru Impreza claims 425% of EPA, but the EPA city/highway figures he entered were 11 and 0. The second car, a Toyota Camry, claims 330% of a 9/9 city/highway mileage estimate. You have to wonder about the rest of their figures, when their base figures are so far off the mark.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-28-2008, 07:24 PM I saw that and didn't have time to fix it yesterday. I'll adjust them momentarily.
Prius Envy 12-29-2008, 08:38 PM Have a look now. ;)
Sweet. :)
PaleMelanesian 12-30-2008, 10:52 AM Outstanding! My one gripe about the mileage logs, and you cured it. :D Thanks, Sean.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-30-2008, 11:20 AM Anything for you, Andrew. ;)
sno779 12-30-2008, 12:20 PM If we are changing the mileage logs, something I have wondered about is instead of the 1/4 year contest, why not have it a normal part of the logs and everyone is included. Along with the 1/4 year, how about a 1/2 year, 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 5000 mile, 10000 mile, 20000 mile, 40000 mile listing, all changable with a click of the mouse. Just my 2 cents worth.....Louis
SentraSE-R 12-30-2008, 02:45 PM I'd like to see a longer list/larger number of gasoline vehicles. People make the mileage list with motorcycles having 0 miles listed, and with diesels barely exceeding EPA estimates. You can't make the list with a gas car unless you're an elite hypermiler exceeding 150% of EPA.
PaleMelanesian 12-30-2008, 03:30 PM If you click the "Gas" heading, you get a separate list of just the gas vehicles.
There's a dropdown at the top of the page to show more. It's really slow with so many cars, so the short list is the default.
:( my lifetime mileage log doesn't even show in the top 50, so I know what you mean.
GaryG 12-30-2008, 07:25 PM :( my lifetime mileage log doesn't even show in the top 50, so I know what you mean.
This is the first time I've ever put my vehicle in a mileage log. My log doesn't even show up in the top 100, so I pretty much thought I suck with my '09 FWD FEH. When I clicked on show All and did the percentage of EPA comparison, I found I was 14th on the list of hybrid vehicles with the highest percentage over EPA. With all the great hypermilers on this site, this make me feel I'm doing my part with what I choose to drive.
Thanks for putting thing in perspective Sean!

Right Lane Cruiser 12-30-2008, 07:44 PM You're quite welcome, Gary! We have always valued your participation here and now it is even more visible that you are an awesome hypermiler in your own right. :)
SentraSE-R 12-30-2008, 08:53 PM How is the combined EPA mileage calculated? What I see on the EPA website differs for both my cars from what this website calculates. And I'm sure I've seen the EPA estimates for my car change. When I bought my car, the EPA estimates were 22 city, 28 highway, with 26 combined. The "original" values posted by the EPA's website now are 22 city, 28 highway, with 24 combined. The 08 values are 19 city, 26 highway, 22 combined. This clean mpg website uses 25 combined, apparently derived by splitting the difference between the 22 city and 28 highway that I entered.
My wife's Elantra has original EPA estimates of 24 city, 32 highway, 27 combined, per the EPA website. The 08 values are 21 city, 29 highway, 24 combined. Cleanmpg's combined mileage is 28, again obtained by splitting the 24/32 I entered. I'm getting 39.1 mpg driving my wife's car. 39.1 mpg is 144.81% of 27 mpg, and 139.64% of 28 mpg. I calculate I'm getting 144.81% of EPA. Cleanmpg calculates I'm getting 139.64% of EPA.
Is there a reason this site calculates a combined mileage that's different from the published EPA values?
Right Lane Cruiser 12-30-2008, 09:45 PM Because it is a much simpler computation and one that has historically been used on this site.
Kacey Green 12-30-2008, 10:46 PM I don't see my name in the 1/4 year FE challenge :(
Right Lane Cruiser 12-30-2008, 11:27 PM Sorry, Kacey. I have to manually place any participants into that section of the logs and I've not had the chance to comb through the entries just yet.
Kacey Green 12-30-2008, 11:35 PM Ah, I didn't know it was by hand
PaleMelanesian 12-31-2008, 08:14 AM I don't understand why it needs to be by hand. If you added a new category for each FE run, we could set them up ourselves. Sure, there would be some cleanup, but it'd be less than manually entering all of them. You could lock it down after 2 weeks or something.
Right Lane Cruiser 12-31-2008, 11:52 AM Andrew, I set it up that way because frankly vehicles aren't even entered with correct propulsion type for normal use. Before I removed the "Other" propulsion type you might recall the log getting littered with huge numbers of this type because it was the default. I removed that option and made the default "Gas" to cut down on the errors and I still have to correct a fair number of them.
Not allowing the 1/4 challenge type in the list was simply an effort to keep that section clean.
Prius Envy 01-02-2009, 10:56 AM I don't know if it's due to the changes or not, but the first tank I entered for my Light Sabre isn't showing up in the listings. It still says "This car has no tanks." The mileage in the badge was adjusted to match the tank though, so I'm guessing the info is in the database.
Maybe it doesn't want to display it because I got less than EPA on that tank? ;)
Right Lane Cruiser 01-02-2009, 12:29 PM Fixed. There seems to have been an error creating your Profile named Baseline. I added it to the database and now your tank shows up.
