All the automobile manufacturers seem to be doing this nowadays. (cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=175254)

Daimler’s Smart ED (BEV) w/ Li-Ion batteries currently being tested in the “e-mobility Berlin” project.

MB and Evonik Industries are co-developing the energy storage system of the future.

Based on Li-Ion technology from Evonik and with Daimler manufacturing expertise, both groups will drive future R&D and production of Li-Ion cells and battery systems for automobile use in Germany. In the near term, Li-Tec cells (subsidiary of both Daimler and Evonik) will appear in Mercedes-Benz Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV’s).

“Evonik is the only company that can actually bring about commercial series production of Li-Ion battery cells of this kind,” says Werner Müller, CEO of Evonik Industries AG. “We will also continue our ongoing investment in relevant future technologies. In the last 30 years, Daimler engineers have registered over 600 patents associated with battery-powered vehicles – over 230 of which were in the field Li-Ion technology,” comments Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Evonik’s subsidiary Li-Tec is set to make a significant contribution to the success of this continued development. On December 15, 2008, Daimler AG (MB’s parent) took on a 49.9 percent stake in Li-Tec. Evonik Industries AG already holds a 50.1 percent stake. Both partners are seeking the involvement of a third shareholder in Li-Tec with expertise in electrical and electronic systems integration. Furthermore, the companies will also establish a joint venture with a clear focus on the development and production of batteries and battery systems for automotive applications. The upcoming joint venture will see Daimler holding a 90 percent stake and Evonik the remaining 10 percent.

The Li-Ion batteries produced by the joint venture will initially be used to supply Daimler AG exclusively. Beyond that, the sale of cells and battery systems to the open market place is planned.

Evonik’s Li-Ion cell development

Evonik has invested approximately 80 million Euros to begin manufacture of production-ready hi-tech Li-Ion cells that are supposedly superior to competitors Li-Ion cels in several areas.

Li-Tec cells are “supposedly” the most suitable cel for BEV applications due to their ceramic separators. The Li-Tec Li-Ion flat cell boasts a high energy density, compact dimension, outstanding safety and superior life-cycle compared to other Li-Ion manufacturers products according to both Daimler and Evonik. The first generation Li-Tec Li-Ion batteries are scheduled for use in publically available MB BEV’s no later than 2011.

Li-Ion batteries are the current key to a future of sustainable mobility

Changes in the automotive industry are increasing the demand for clean and efficient vehicles. According to forecasts, the market size for high-performance Li-Ion batteries will exceed the 10 billion Euro mark within the next decade; with the market for battery materials exceeding 4 billion Euros.

The number of jobs in Evonik’s key technology alone is set to increase from its current level of around 100 to over 1000 over the longer term. “That is also a clear commitment to the expansion of production in Germany,” adds Müller, going on to say “We have come a long way along our route to becoming Europe’s number one manufacturer of lithium-ion battery components. We now want to build further on our technological lead in this partnership with Daimler.”

MB has already successfully proved Li-Ion’s everyday usability in fleet tests including the Smart ED in London, “e-mobility Berlin” and “e-mobility Italy”.

There's something strangely familiar with this business arrangement. It's a remarkable coincidence but the German battery company Evonik and the US battery company, founded by Stan Ovshinsky, Ovonics were companies sought after by car makers for their battery technology. Even their names are similar. With Evonik Daimler invested 49% in the company to obtain its Lithium Ion battery technology. In the US GM bought a 50% share in Ovonics to obtain the Nickel Metal Hydride technology from that company. Both GM and Daimler were and are, respectively building electric cars and needed a battery supplier.

I hope this is where history diverges from the present. In GM's case they sold their share in Ovonics to Texaco and a few days later Texaco was bought by Chevron. Ovonics was reorganized and renamed to Cobasys. Now you can't get the Cobasys Nickel Metal Hydride battery unless you're a large purchaser of batteries like GM. If you want the Cobasys batteries for your EV conversion you can forget it because Cobasys won't even talk to you. This time though the arrangement with Evonik and Daimler will probably be different.
