I guess we can continue this daily thread thing for the time being?

Nothing special this morning, except I finally saw the face of the kid who tears around in that white RSX every morning. As I was getting ready to get on the highway I saw him try to pass (this time legally), fail due to traffic, and then try again only to wind up directly in front of me at the light. I figure, he put so much effort into getting in front of me, why not just whip out my pen and blatantly write down his tags for my own future reference? So I did, and he saw it, and I'm 90% sure he knows why given his routine. Maybe a bad judgement call on my part but maybe he'll take the subtle hint before getting himself and possibly someone else hurt. A guy can dream...

Oh, right, the FE thing! Pretty miserable trip of 40.3mpg this morning. Also, I filled up yesterday at 547.7 miles and pumped 13.725gal, for a whopping 39.9mpg. It's kind of sad that I broke my run of 7 40mpg+ tanks, but it probably had to happen some day. Morning temps in the mid 50s (F) aren't doing much to help recently.

I got gas last night. Finished off the 640.0 mile tank at 62.1MPG. A new personal best!! :Banane09:
I rolled into the station at 62.0MPG at 639.8 miles and since it's a large station, I decided to stealth and glide to round up the miles. As I stealthed around, the MPG went up. The OCD part of me really wanted 62.0MPG at 640 miles.

Yeah yeah, I know the Insighters are still calling me a slacker but I'm fine with that. :p

By the way, I know that probably only one person will understand this, so if your not xcel, feel free to skip this part:
I drive Hwy21 every day to Gages Lake and then Hunt Club. Knowing that I wanted to get and keep the mileage, I continued up Hunt Club to Stern School, over to Dillys and up to Wadsworth. The 41/Wadsworth station currently has the cheapest gas around. There's some dandy gliding on Dillys past the pyramid.

This morning, my commute segment was 68.4 which I know will be pummelled this afternoon sitting in traffic, running the A/C, draining the battery. The A/C will be on because I just don't have the heart to stop carpooling just because I don't want to affect my mileage.

Happy Tuesday!

I purchased gas yesterday and came through with a displayed mpg of 64.3 on a tank of 766 miles. The actual mileage was 62.9, not my best, but close to the 63.1 of last year.

With temperatures here in the mid 60s in the AM and mid 80s in the PM, this will be the last tank of the summer high end tanks. So far, after 110 miles, I am at 63.5.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi All:

___Great tanks and segments even if they are not the record busters …

___Tony, there is some beautiful P&G country out north of us, isn’t there and I am personally glad I did not take your Prius II down a notch during my time behind the wheel as I always worry about that ;)

___As for me, I still have 2 movies to watch, a bit more write-up, some news to post, and hopefully will not have to go anywhere for a few days … Whoops, forgot about the CarMax thing looking for the new red TCH w/ Leather and NAVI for the wife :D

Good drive in this am. Just not just mpg, @ 46 mpg. Low 70's, no wind and humid. Funny how the Civic hasnt wanted to climb up on th empg curve the last week or so. See how the evening drive goes.

A better segment this morning -- made 65mpg. For fun today I kicked off my right shoe and drove barefoot. I was in EV w/assist and I could swear I could not only feel but hold the exact tension-point in gas pedal pressure just before the ICE kicks back on.
LA's heating up again, it's going to be another warm drive going home today.

Okay getting in to work today. The cold spell is making things more difficult to pull decent numbers.

I had a pretty good day overall. The drive to take my wife to work this morning(5.86 miles) was 58.6 mpg. The drive on to work was nothing special though. 9.1 miles at 49.6 mpg. Tonight was much better. I took the back way to pick up my wife and the 9.3 mile trip came in at 61.0. From her work to home ended up at 53.4 mpg. Now that I look at the numbers, I think they were all new records.:woot: Hmm, I wonder if this has anything to do with my trip on Saturday.:D

i'm leaving for work very soon (one way trip 8.5 miles), maybe today will be the day i time all 25 lights :P on my drive to work... i usually have no hope because its mostly uphill and people are on the streets (best try was 51 mpg). When it gets dark by the time i'm done my shift, the streets should be cleared and I should have no problems hoping scoring a 60 mpg (best try was 65 mpg?) on my way back well if I don't get greedy that is... (accelerating to a light only to find it turning red on you :(

**** you Larry!!! i'll learn the secrets soon enough :P i'll edit my post for my numbers when i get back from my work 10 hours later.

bleh 46.9 mpg there 8.3 miles and 48 mpg back at 8.6 miles for a total of 47.5 mpg bleh

one would think nighttime its easier to get better mileage but for some odd reason the weather just made my engine worked a lot harder... by the time it was nighttime temps dropped by at least 5 degrees C which is enough to make some what a difference when cold starting.

CitrusInsighter
08-22-2006, 03:19 PM
Last night I was so worried about the cold that I plugged the engine block heater in and it certainly made a difference today. I decided to make my usual 4.3 mile drive to school in preparation for when I have to go at 7 am in traffic next month. I managed a decent 85.3 mpg round trip, but then went looking for an ideal P&G road around here. Still haven't found one, but there was a nice 2.1 mile stretch (both ways) just over 150.0 mpg.

Tomorrow I will be out looking for another 150 stretch, hopefully if the school lot is open I can hold it for 5 miles or more.

Hi Justin:

___I was just doing some math off the top of my head … Not really thinking of much else …

8.5 mile round trip for 180 school days a year = 1,530 miles.
Insight: 10.6 gallons of fuel - 150 mpg average = 1,590 miles

___Times you would have to refuel over an entire year? Less then once :D

___It is almost possible knowing what you know today ... Not with the traffic you face on a daily basis but for someone else in a less congested area, the possibilities are not only achieveable, they are downright scary ;)

___Good Luck

Sounds good to me. That might be more appropriate for the post volume. I'll edit the subject of this thread accordingly.

Better commute this morning at 43.0mpg. The difference was being completely alone for the first 1/3rd and relatively alone for extended periods after that, allowing me to DWL between 30 and 40mph without anyone so much as noticing. I only took one FAS the entire time, though I did get some lucky breaks with the lights.

**EDIT**
I tried to edit the thread subject, which appears to have worked while viewing the thread but doesn't seem to be showing up at the forum level.

Well the right sandal was slipped off again today and is now going to stay off as long as it's warm. I didn't feel safe driving barefoot before but that was when I was going 10-15mph faster on the freeways than I am now. But given how much my foot "learned" the pedal over that time with shoe-on, my sensitivity to accelerator pressure now --shoe-off-- is simply phenomenal.

I also had a lot of nice stretches with no one behind me so I'd say I got away with <50mph speeds at least 40% of this drive. I think my car likes the higher temps too. So I ended up with a great segment to work today, pulled into my parking space at 70.1mpg! :)

The barefoot tip is very helpful for fine throttle control. It really helps when trying to lock the iFCD at a certain point.

Another tip that helps in the Insight is to prop your right leg against the center console to lock in the throttle position. This helps on rough roads when its difficult to maintain a set pedal position.

Today's commute was weird - I had a side trip to make, on unfamiliar roads. That messed up my daily MPG segment. I will have to work on recovering some of it on the trip home.

Today wasn't too bad for me. The trip to the wife's work this morning came in at 58.*(5.86 miles). The trip to my shop was 49.6.(9.1 miles) The afternoon trip to pick up my wife was 59.8.(9.1miles) From my wife's work to my mom's was 60.2.(9.9 miles) I then went shopping and ended up with a 60 + segment on the way there.(forgot to check distance) The trip back to my mom's wasn't as good at 50.3. The trip from my mom's to my house was better though. It came in at 63.1;(4.6 miles) thank you country roads.:D

i don't know what changed tonight, but coming home from visiting my horse, i could just about coast in neutral as far as i wanted. maybe it's the heavy weather or humidity, but there were several times when i coasted over a mile on almost level roads before i went below 40MPH. i didn't want to FAS since it was getting dark, but it was a nice route home.

when will i break this 48 mpg average i'm going to work :( Lol I need a new job and maybe a less hectec route if I'm ever going to see 60's ever in my life.

i think my best attempt is stopping at 3 lights out of the 25 lights I encounter on a daily basis, even that doesn't gareenntee that I'm going to hit 60.

This tank is in the crapper so far. I'm at roughly 90mi and the ScanGauge is showing 38.xmpg. Morning temps are about 20F lower than when I was flirting with 50mpg, and now I'm struggling to keep it above 40. It's alright, though. This time last year I was in the high 20s or very low 30s under the same conditions :D.

The one nice thing is that I've run into a streak of relatively polite drivers, and my blood pressure has been nice and low all week. I'm used to folks tailgating even while I do 5-over, but for some reason they have started keeping an extremely healthy following distance while I DWL around the speed limit. Lower gas prices leading to an unusual benevolence, or just dumb luck? Either way I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

RAIN. Rain rain rain rain.
Not just rain but deafening rain with pummeling lightning. Constant, blinding, mileage wrecking rain. It's not good; not good at all.
This morning started with roughly 100 miles on the tank and 64.6mpg. 20 miles later I'm sitting on 62.4mpg.

Extended forecast? More and more and yet more rain.

My carefully nursed 61+mpg tank-to-be got trashed yesterday. Unexpectedly had to go run a bunch of errands in town with the family after work, and due to logistical circumstances HAD to use my car. So far I’d been able to save it for freeway commuting only the last 3 weeks. But the way things were yesterday family harmony would have gone by the wayside if I rearranged our 2 other cars in the driveway and street in order not to use mine.

I thought well I'm near empty anyway so if I fill up the tank now, before it gets killed with all the stop-and-go, I’ll at least get to save it. But due to time factor they wouldn’t let me fill-up till we were heading home, when it was exactly too late so I was thinking to rescue it with another day or two's commute. By that time I had about convinced my family I've lost my mind and reverted to a whiney selfish 2 year old (which was pretty on-target). So I grit my teeth and said self, just deal with it so we filled up anyway and it ended up at 59.3mpg.

73.2 MPG today!

Left the base and merged onto I64 to pick up the kids and head home. After awhile, I noticed a work truck in front of me that was just loping along at about 53 in a 60 MPH zone. I just tagged behind him and watched my '6. After a few miles the car behind me took an exit leaving a white van behind me. I waited for the inevitable crowding that was sure to follow, but he just hung behind me maintaining a comfortable distance. I just DWL'd as much as I could and the FCD just kept on climbing. The instantaneous FCD was hanging around 100 with an occasional dip to the 70's as we cruised on down the road. Folks passing me on the left all the time, but hanging behind the big truck gave me an "excuse" to cruise 5-8 below the posted speed limit.

As the miles passed, the FCD just kept on climbing 66...68...70 MPG . This is so cool! The guy in front just kept an even speed around 53 and the guy on my '6 never crowded me and the miles clicked on. After about 20 glorious miles, I had to peel off with the FCD reporting 76.4 MPG . I knew I was going to loose a few points in the final stretch, but I tried my best to keep those numbers. Even managed almost a mile of EV cruise with the cooperation of a right turn signal that actually stayed green for me. Rolled thru the school parking lot into a straight out parking spot just as the wheels stopped, but it was an uphill exit out of the slot. Couldn't be helped. 76 MPG on the FCD . But you know, I arrived at the school within two minutes of my normal arrival time!

Picked up the kids and back out for the final run to the house. Tried a couple EV spurts, but the traffic congestion didn't help. Fighting to keep the FCD from melting away before my eyes.

EV'd as much as I could from the secondary road turn off to the roads in my neighborhood. The kids were oblivious as I crawled thru the neighborhood around 15 MPH trying to keep the 4 white assist bars from dropping off. Please God, not the dreaded "lurch" when the ICE kicks in.

Slid into the garage with 73.2 on the FCD at wheels stop.

Clearly the truck that provided the "screen" was largely responsible for this segment.

But what a blessing. I'll take it.

Hi Bob:

___For being a relatively new and beginner hypermiler, that was one super hot segment and I hope you have about a billion more in your lifetime :D

___Great job with the patience and recognizing an opportunity most would have never thought of taking advantage of! I have been in the passenger seats with good if not great hypermilers that have gone for the pass and I almost have to grab the wheel and manually pull there foot from the pedal because they do not know the a gift that has just been handed to them … I am glad you not only recognized it but took advantage of the traffic situation and the numbers clearly showed. Even if it’s not a full blown close in, the slower speeds without the hassle of what some here call the “Proctologists” (was that coined by Dan K?) can only help make a good segment a great one!

___We here by bestow RHwinger as the CleanMPG - great segment - Hypermiler of the day! Nice work and congratulations.

___Tarabell, there will be other days ahead which will make this one but a distant memory. I have a few more to add to the hypermiler list so I am awaiting your next fill with much anticipation :)

___DiamondLarry, you are getting so good you are starting to scare me :D

I hope I don't scare you too much, but I had to take a trip to my mom's that is 5.1 miles. On the way there the SG was reporting just a tick or two above 63 mpg. On the way home, I almost scared myself. When I went to set up for my exit tomorrow, the garage door was up which allowed me to get more properly situated to roll back to the driveway and roll to my spot without using the ICE. It's very similar to how your drive is set up. Anyway, when I came to a stop, the SG was reading 74.8 mpg.:D :woot: :woot:

Looks like this tank will come in at the 45 mpg mark.

Had some A/C use. One day the Cvic just wouldnt climb up on its mpg curve. Another day we had thunder storms at 5pm hit. This caused many wrecks. It took me over a hour to get 10 miles. No matter which way I went, Beep and creep.

I will take the 45 mpg tank and call it good. I will fill back up this evening. Maybe take a drive to B'ville, OK. and check out the Harley dealer there. Stop into my Honda dealer and check into having the ECU on the Civic reflashed. Im seeing they have a update that helps with the DBW throttle lag and the rpm hang when shifting.

WORST FE DAY EVER!

All that rain you folks to the west have been dealing with is now here in full force. I made it to work OK but by the time I left around noon (half day for this guy) it was already pouring. Then I had to drive 100mi through non-stop downpours so bad that there was no ridge left to ride. So now I've added a 36mpg trip to a tank that was barely at 38mpg to start...awful :(. My only hope is to stretch this one out to the max and try to recover what I can, if I can.

___You are running through a massive rain/T-storm and are still punching out ~ 25 +% above EPA combined … Just imagine what all those untrained drivers on the same road were receiving at the same time? Can you imagine 30% UNDER EPA combined? God help us if we cannot get through to those that have yet to learn what is possible and/or what they are capable of from their automobiles and themselves. My FE seems to have taken a dive of sorts. When I went to pick up my wife tonight, I could only manage just over 61. I realize it's still pretty good but I used every trick I used yesterday when I got 66.6. Later on, I went to meet my son near at my old house which is only 2 doors away from my moms and, on the way home, I could only mange 65.7 when I got over 74 last night. The strange thing is that it hasn't rained all day so it couldn't be that. The only other thing is that the barometric pressure is dropping due to storm activity that should arrive here around midnight. Very wierd.

I believe theres a TSB out on the ECU flash. Its for the 5at and 5mt r18 and Si's. havent heard about HCHII. Threads are on vtec and 8thgencivic.

The 5at drivers have been complaining about a lag/dead spot off idle. And the 5mt drivers have been complaining about rev hang when shifting. Si owners have been complaining about off idle lag and rev hang.

I dont mind the rev hang if Im driving hard. Removes alot of heel and toe work. Granted Im good at it and was taught at a very young age. I would at this point prefer rpm's to drop like days of old for FE and let me catch the throttle if I desire.

If you have a 06 civic,,, check it out. :)

I think BP does have a affect. There are days with my best efforts, no wind and 70/80 degree morning temps,,, I cant for the life of me get my 06 EX into the low 50's for mpg in the mornings. Mornings always being my best part of the day.

Also for my r18 Civic,,, I think high intake air temps with high humidity hurts it mpg wise. But some warm air intake test I did last spring showed promise for this winter. Soon as i get morning temps back into the mid 50's and lower Im going to revsit WAI.

I have a feeling that BP, humidity and temp have alot to do with mpg and my r18 Civic. Even with the Scanguage i cant see big swings on its read outs,,, but do see them in mpg... From what Im seeing on my car,,, i hope the hybrids are doing the same. ---- well sort-a... :)

After yesterday's disapointing results, today was a bit better. Last night I decided to check a few things and found that my IAT sensor mod was not functioning right. I have replaced the sensor with 2- 220 ohm resistors in parallel so that the ECU "sees" a temp of 247F. When I checked last night with the SG, it was fluctuating between 200 and 236F. I re-twisted the resistors together to get it back to 247. The trip home from the station was 70.6 mpg. The tank came in at 52.358:woot: This is >2.2 above my previous best.:woot: :D

I ended the week with a short 50 mpg tank yesterday. I took a drive to Bartlesville and Stillwater to check out two Harley dealerships. Not going to hand over my cash to just any stealership yeah know. :)
