What are the most dangerous foods to eat while driving?
Obviously, anything requiring two hands is a no-no, although with practice one can become quite good at holding the steering wheel with a knee. (Uh, at least that’s what I’ve been told.)
If it involves a fork — or even a spork — it’s probably not safe either.
Truth is, any food can be a distraction, and distractions are a factor in a fourth of car crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration… http://www.star-telegram.com/804/story/1093494.html
Chuck 12-16-2008, 09:13 AM Maybe I should have answered seldom, but just can't remember the last time I munched while driving. Drinking a coke is another story.

Coffee - yep. I did that this morning. I only pick it up when I'm in a long glide or sitting at a light or something.
I usually don't eat while driving unless I have a copilot (my wife) to arrange things for me. She takes care of most of the troublesome parts, like unwrapping the burger. That usually happens on long-distance trips.
Locally, I sometimes have a drink, but nothing to eat. Even the radio is too much distraction for good hypermiling. ;)
rdprice64 12-16-2008, 10:12 AM My son is learning to drive right now, so no eating, drinking, or anything else except driving. I usually make him turn the radio off too :)

Hm. That sounds like my own personal operating parameters.
KrazyDawg 12-16-2008, 10:35 AM The only thing I do is drink bottled water and that's usually while waiting at a traffic light. I don't bother opening up the cap on the highway.
Kacey Green 12-16-2008, 11:00 AM Other than on long trips I can't recall the last time I ate and drove in the HCHII, I ate and rode when the 48 State participants were in town and Wayne was driving.
In the Prius I'd eat in the car 3 times a week at a minimum I don't know what changed, I'm not afraid to eat in the car and on anything other than my commute I won't hesitate to grab a drink if I'm thirsty, however I prefer straws to screw tops because of the logistics while driving.
WoodyWoodchuck 12-16-2008, 11:33 AM Can’t remember how long ago the last time I ate while driving was but I have done it, so I voted seldom. No two handed meals, I think it was some leftover french fries from Char Pit. I ate inside and took what was left and finished them on the drive home.
It would be a rare occasion that I would have a drink while driving. My commute is 30 – 40 minutes and I have enough self control that I do not need to have a beverage for that amount of time. I will have a beverage on longer drives, hour or more duration. It is just something to sip on rather than consume. Meaning a cup of coffee will be more than half full after a 2 ½ hour drive.
If I am that hungry or thirsty I take that as a sign that my body needs a break to refuel. Pull off the highway, find a nice place and relax while consuming. Then I can get back on the road and devote my attentions to trying to coax the elusive 50 MPG tank out of my little Yaris.
Mr. Pancake 12-16-2008, 11:41 AM I'll definetly have something cold to drink in the summer when I'm doing everything I can not to have to turn on the a/c (usually on the way home from work)
laurieaw 12-16-2008, 12:24 PM . Coffee — It spills easily. Drivers often overreact to splashes, not because they’re worried about burns, but because they don’t want to stain their work clothes.
has the man never heard that coffee can be covered? i frequently drink coffee when i drive, in a covered insulated mug, and can honestly say i have never spilled it. nor have i ever spilled a soft drink.
yes, i have eaten in the car, but never anything messy and nothing that takes two hands to eat. bad me.
Bruce 12-16-2008, 12:47 PM Salad. :D
I can't recall ever eating or drinking anything while driving my current car, and rarely in it when stopped. It goes a long way toward keeping the car clean.
Chuck 12-16-2008, 01:30 PM "THE DANGERS OF EATING WHILE DRIVING!!!!!!!!!" :eyebrow:
"Save the children, Helen! He's got a burrito!!"
Cripes, it must be a REALY slow news day....I attempt to find a non-Detroit bailout (hundreds of them) story and get this. {sigh}
MaxxMPG 12-16-2008, 01:47 PM Salad. :D
Yes, salad! :D ...But only with the drippy low-viscosity salad dressing containing enough fat content or food coloring to trash the attire when it dribbles off the lettuce.
Other must-eat in the car would be a bowl of cereal. Not only a two-handed task, but also meets the requirement for drippy and highly prone to sloshing. Especially the puffed variety where it all floats on top of whatever milk is poured in. Nothing complements designer formalwear like a random depositing of pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, green clovers, and blue diamonds.
chibougamoo 12-16-2008, 02:34 PM The MOST dangerous food? Has to be oysters on the half-shell. See, first ya got to balance the plate of the suckers in one hand, then ya got to throw yer head back while inhaling one of the little critters ...
... and then you have all this unmistakeable crustacean-type evidence you have to clear up and get out of the wreck, before the Man comes and hauls you away for too much libido and not enough brains. And that all ASSUMES you even LIKE the critters, to begin with!
Definitely THE most dangerous food ...
Shiba3420 12-16-2008, 02:46 PM It all depends on the person. I have no problem eating while driving, but if I spill I may utter a curse, but I don't look down till safe.
Also, I either have a helper in the car to hand me my meal, a bit at a time, or I get everything prepped before hitting the road. Usually I prefer to wait till I get home, but on a long trip, or when I'm hungry enough that I'm feeling lightheaded, I'll definatly eat & drive....carefully & with a correct order of importance...
1. Safety of those driving around me
2. Safety of those riding with me
3. Safety of myself
4. Safety of other's property
5. Safety of my property
6. The rules of the road
7. "Other" And here is where food, phone, and all those distraction lie. If I can maintain the top 6, this I don't go here. Even hypermiling only lives here..but usually higher than food;)
PaleMelanesian 12-16-2008, 03:01 PM I concur. If only more drivers had that attitude.
hobbit 12-16-2008, 03:17 PM I get 600 miles per gallon on my coffee, and it lives in a covered
commuter mug with a straw sticking out so it never has to tilt
or make me take my eyes off the road. Eating? I sit in the lot
outside where the food came from and poke at the GPS to do trip
planning while I'm chowin' down, and then get on the road.

drimportracing 12-16-2008, 04:12 PM I don't wanna promote DWI (driving while ingesting) but let's say your really hungry and you just traded $15 worth of pizza for $60 worth of sushi, you've got the chopsticks in the bag, your on your way home, the light is turning red, wasabi and shrimp sauce is close by...I'm just saying....it's like eating a McDonalds french fry outta the bag.
1. Any Chinese food, especially rice w/chopsticks
2. Soup
3. steak w/knife and fork
4. jello
5. cereal w/spoon
6. Pad thai w/chopsticks
7. hot hot slice of pizza, I mean real hot, like you worked there hot.
8. ice cream w/spoon
9. Lasagna
and the #10 Most Dangerous Food to Eat While Driving...... (drum roll)......
10. http://www.coleschophouse.com/assets/images/side_flambe.jpg
Bananas Foster Flambe'
It was a toss up between the flambe and the live monkey brains:eek: from the faces of death movie but I couldn't get the table in the Geo.:D - Dale

Radio_tec 12-16-2008, 07:14 PM I have on occasion drank one of those Star Bucks concentrated caffeine things in the small can only at my wife's insistance to stay awake but I draw the line on food in the car. Besides food makes the car smell like a restaurant.
owlmaster08 12-16-2008, 09:02 PM I'll eat snacks on long trips in the car while on the Interstate...But there can't be any traffic passing me any time soon. If I am in the middle of snacking and any cars start to come close I put the snack back down so I have my full brain on driving and can use both hands if need be. (Defensive Driving! It doesn't matter how good of a driver YOU are).
Earthling 12-16-2008, 09:19 PM There's nothing that gets a car as filthy on the inside as eating and driving. Yuck!
Drive or eat, not both. Leave the crumbs and stains on a restaurant tablecloth, and not your car upholstery!
Harry
Right Lane Cruiser 12-16-2008, 09:19 PM Besides food makes the car smell like a restaurant.
YES. I don't allow food to be eaten in my cars but leftovers have the same smell issue. :(
ILAveo 12-16-2008, 10:14 PM I rarely eat more than three "meals" a day while driving:). I don't have a typical job with regular hours, locations or breaks (or hygienic dining facilities), so sometimes it's a simple matter of eating when there's a chance in the truck driving between crises. The main trick is to not eat complicated food in heavy traffic. Trail mix and a pint of milk (separately) is my favorite driving meal.
Liquid hot cheese should be avoided while driving--so I'm thinking fondue would be on my top 10 most dangerous list along with anything flambe.
Taliesin 12-17-2008, 08:35 AM Do I eat while driving? yes...
Only one-handed foods.
Only when there are no cars within 1/4 mile of me (except for "finger foods" that I can blindly grab and stuff in my mouth like fries).
I prepare my eating space before I get on the road.
If I need my hands for driving, the food is getting dropped back in the bag. I'll worry about fishing it back out later (and even then I'll do it blind and keep my eyes on the road unless I pull over).
Driving is the only time that I have covers on my drinks.
SentraSE-R 12-17-2008, 09:30 AM I snack (chips, corn nuts) and drink (fruit juice) on long drives. The only other food I eat while driving is Gag-in-the-bag (Jack-in-the-box) tacos. They come in an envelope, and are folded so I can eat them one-handed without dripping. Hamburgers from McGrease and Booger King are two-hand items, and their sauces drip.
rdprice64 12-17-2008, 12:39 PM Driving is the only time that I have covers on my drinks.
I sooooo despise disposable lids and straws that if I am forced to drink from a non-reusable cup then I take a chance and do it without a lid
Obviously this would happen only rarely, otherwise I would make a mess all the time :o
