Community:

As Executive Director of the Plug-In Hybrid Coalition of the Carolinas, I have been able to get the ear of a good sized race track here in the Carolinas. Don't want to say which yet as my first meeting with them is scheduled December 10th. But they are excited at trying to do a promotional event on fuel efficiency, plug-in vehicles, future cars - etc. I am looking for creative ideas how hyper-miling could be a promotional idea for an event, particularly in light of gas being dirt cheap. How do we prevent folks from losing interest now that gas isn't $4 a gallon? Ideas would helpful, for example:

1. in tight economic times, could a driving clinic for municipal workers help municipalities reduce fuel costs by x%, followed up by a video posting online of the clinic and top 5 tips to reduce mileage
2. maybe a (slow speed) hyper-miling competition on the track among three hypermilers naming it after my corporate sponsor or a competition among a mayor, celebrity, and a hypermiler
3. children's educational project or field trip (how would you do it)

Nothing is set and right now I don't have a budget but are any hyper-milers interested in attending or participating in such an event? JP

Depending on when and where exactly, I would be interested. It might be a drive for me, so the "where" is a big "if".

Idea #2 sounds fun! Idea #1 sounds like a winner, but I don't know about its long-lasting effects (you can't force people to change).

I’m new to the game and still learning but think it would be a great idea. I’ll offer to help out in any way I can from the Raleigh area.

I like the ‘race’ idea. What better way to re-use a track then change from fastest run to most efficient run! Clinics and personal demonstrations of techniques are a great idea also. Personally, I would love to have this just to check that my techniques are actually being executed properly and that I am getting the best possible out of my vehicles.

There could be several ‘races’ or classes. An open event with any type of vehicle competing, a gas only, hybrid only... An SUV, truck class type of thing. Just to show that even larger V8 vehicles are capable of getting better than EPA mileage figures.

The race of the future, the fastest car doesn’t always win!
