View Full Version : Just got myself a diesel yaris
vtec-e 11-21-2008, 08:02 PM I finally retired the civic. The right car came up before i got to the 300,000km mark which was a bummer but the gears were getting a little hard to get into, i could smell a little clutch and she was taking on water when it rained. Not to mention a little rust where it shouldn't have been! And the heating was behaving funny........full grille block maybe.....?????:p
Anyway, it's an English reg yaris so i have a little paperwork to follow up on to make it road legal here in Erin's Green Isle. It's got a 1.4D4D turbo intercooled diesel engine that regular users get 58mpg US in so i hope to bump that up by quite a bit.;)
I'll post pics when i get up in the morning. It's a 3 door and has 3 seatbelts in the back and it takes 3 booster seats no problem. I'll only need it (back seat) 4 or 5 times a year anyway so the lack of back doors isn't a problem.
I promise to fill in the mileage log here and will keep it up to date. I know i've been slack as hell with that up to now:( so that will change i promise.:)

seftonm 11-21-2008, 08:46 PM Nice car, it should be able to put out some serious fuel economy numbers if you work at it. I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do :)
Right Lane Cruiser 11-21-2008, 09:01 PM Congratulations, Ollie!! I know you've been looking for one of these for a while now -- it should be a wonderful journey of discovery and achievement for you!

vtec-e 11-22-2008, 12:02 PM There's another thing, it's sitting on firestone multihawks but there is NO max sidewall pressure written on them. I pumped them to 44psi anyway as i guess thats what it is. .........or maybe it's 50.............:D:D

Right Lane Cruiser 11-22-2008, 12:40 PM That's a beautiful car most any of us here would be proud to own -- mud or not!
Boy are you going to have fun!! :D
Did you check the other side of the tires for markings? Maybe the wheel covers are overlapping?
Harold 11-22-2008, 06:26 PM I'll second that! H
Kacey Green 11-23-2008, 01:46 AM Congratulations!
Now lets get that DB info in your sig. :)
vtec-e 11-24-2008, 08:01 AM Well i paid my VRT (776 euro! ouch!!) so i can get my Irish plates tomorrow and can tax it in the next few days. It's my turn to drive to work this week so i'll see how long i get out of the remaining two bars on the fuel level display.
Oh i almost forgot. It takes the three booster seats AND a double buggy! Bugger all else mind.

PaleMelanesian 11-24-2008, 09:17 AM NICE car! Congratulations!
Chuck 11-24-2008, 09:27 AM A clean diesel that seats four and has EPA in the range of the Honda Insight - what could you dislike about that?

That we'll likely never see one in North America. Other than that, nothing ;)
vtec-e 11-25-2008, 11:57 AM I filled up last night and have started the mileage log here. I have a droning noise coming from the right rear wheel. Checked the bearing and it's not as free as it should. Turns out it's a sealed unit that costs 300 euro! I'll take my chances with a scrapyard one..... I'd stick a grease nipple in there only its a sealed unit and i'd get swarf in there and really mess up the bearings.
I checked the tyre for max sidewall markings and there are none anywhere. Looks like a tyre industry conspiracy against hypermilers maaaan!!

No, that means they're rated for unlimited psi;)
vtec-e 12-11-2008, 06:14 PM I'm back after a rather long break due to a lack of internet connection at home.
Anyway, i filled up yesterday and boy was i surprised!
I got 43 litres into the tank and had done 1131 km so thats 3.807L/100k. Not bad for a first tank. For two or three of the commutes i was doing the speed limit of 120kph so on this tank i'm going to stick to 80 to 90kph and see how it goes. I also had to use the rear window heater as it was quite icy lately. I've blocked up the grille some more and now have an opening about 4"x 4" feeding the radiator. On the really chilly days i blocked up the rad completely and it still took ages to heat up the engine. I'll look into a block heater some day......
I havent sorted out the rear wheel bearing yet but it's not going to fall off; It's dragging slightly but is not loose or rough so i'm not overly concerned. I was going to buy a new bearing kit last week only our fridge broke so i had to blow some money on that. Great!

Right Lane Cruiser 12-12-2008, 12:00 AM Nice work, Ollie!!
3.807L/100k
61.8 mpg U.S. is excellent fuel mileage. :D
vtec-e 01-03-2009, 08:11 AM Thanks guys. I'm still on my second tank but this coming week might see another fill. Mostly steady state driving at 80 to 90 kph. No 120kph runs at all so i should see some improvement on this one. There was a few frosty mornings but i had the grille completely blocked so warm up was quicker. Well, about 10 mins for the blue thermometer light to go off.

Harold 01-03-2009, 12:04 PM Boy those are great numbers for tank # 1! You should improve considerable on that? H
vtec-e 01-07-2009, 05:32 AM I filled up last night and the results weren't as good as i'd hoped.:( I "only" got 3.91 L/100k. Which is still great, don't get me wrong. It's just that i was trying more than my last tank and did worse. Having said that, there is the issue of the recent cold(er) spell which must have hurt my mpg more than the last tank.
I also found a place to buy a scangauge here in Ireland! I rang the guy and he said he had some and sold loads in the run up to Christmas! So it seems there are some closet hypermilers around here....:D
I hope to get one next week and then the real fun can begin.:Banane09:

Right Lane Cruiser 01-07-2009, 08:02 AM Still excellent, Ollie.
You are going to have a ball with the SG!! :D
vtec-e 01-30-2009, 02:21 PM Had to fill up sooner than i'd have liked. I got 664 miles out of 43.38 litres. Thing is, i was trying hard and expected more. I thinking this soot build up is the cause so i'll need to do some hot runs to clear her throat so to speak. Still no SG so i'm flying blind.

vtec-e 02-03-2009, 04:27 AM I had to drive in the snow yesterday (4 to 5 inches) and found that my little yaris is a closet snowmobile!
There were suv's and cars skidding into ditches and each other. I was going up a hill and i just cruised on by, without even a hint of wheelslip! I thought the torque would cause problems but i think it actually helped. What surprised me even more was that i didn't have to bring the tires down from sidewall max. Plenty of grip and only the odd bit of ABS going off. Oh, and i ordered my scangauge. Should have it before the weekend.:woot:

vtec-e 02-14-2009, 05:25 PM Got my scangauge and i think its dialled in correctly. Well, the speed matches the cars speedo. Anyway, a 15km return trip today got me 3.2L/100k which is a relief since i replaced the rear hub last week. It got real noisy and must have been dragging like a good thing! The junkyard replacement is slightly noisy but free as a bird. It cost 50 euro compared to a 250 euro new one. I might have to get a new one at some point.
I've noticed how much the cabin fan affects the load on the engine. About 1 or 2 percent. Thats a lot! Man i love the scangauge! Also noticed that the engine takes FOREVER to warm up. Out comes the cardboard!
