Until recently, I've filled up after only a half tank.

This morning I had a three-gallon can of gas just in case while I drove into a Shell gas station with no bars on the gage - i.e. running on empty. Burned 9.956 gallons over 762.4 miles.

To my suprize, the trip computer was lower than the manually calculated mpg (http://www.cleanmpg.com/index.php?page=garage&displayunits=MPG(US)&viewcar=129). The trip computer said 74.9mpg, but hand calculations said 76.5mpg. Really expected it would be the other way around.

When Wayne gets better, I hope he can verify if he burned thirteen gallons on his red Insight once.

Great work! Keep in mind that Wayne tops off, which is probably the only way he's going to get 13 gallons into that thing. I think Randall mentioned that he expects to get in the 1500-1600mi range on his long-tank attempt, and is currently averaging in the 113mpg range which would put his top-off at ~13.7gal if all assumptions are right.

Here's the body of the PM that I sent to Wayne:

OK wayne, I'll give it a try. The record tank distance thing that is. I topped off the tank on the way to work Sunday night, putting in an additional 3.221 gals after the nozzle clicked off, which is where I usually quit filling. Figuring 10.5 gals + 3.2 gets us 13.7 gals @ 110mpg = 1507mi. Should get close, but will need to do better than the 110. I was able to do that on the first RTC yesterday(RTC=round trip commute---theres one I don't recall being in the glossary), and got up towards 120mpg for the 84mi RTC. I took a pic of that display and will take one each day and also starting today, one of the tank progression (trip B). I believe I can't start a thread until I've posted 10 times, so if you would start a thread (if you want to), I'll keep it updated each trip with the pic's and also post the route and vehicle paramters and modifications. Gee's; at 1500 mi and 84 mi RTC thats 18 trips.

At the current tank avg. of 114.x, the 13.7 gals will give us 1562mi.

I had always quit filling at the click off, and had usually put in right around the 10 gals.
I'm going to have to go get one of those 1 gal plastic jugs and put exactlly 1 gal in it for when I run out. I do intend to run-r-dry. The 1 gal will be easy to account for. I must remember to take all the pics on the side of the road:eek: and not at the station afterwards.

Hi Chuck:

___IIRC, the furthest I ever went beyond low fuel and 2 bars was 173 miles at ~ 107 mpg. 10.6 is about a normal fill with no top off. I may have posted that in the link to my attempt 2 + years ago?

___Randall, although I did not run her dry during my attempt, place a 1 gallon can in the back and really run her dry as there is probably another 10 - 20 miles further then you would have imagined previously. There might be just one kink and that was I could never top off the Insight consistently when I wanted too. About every third tank would allow it but not each and every one for whatever reason? It was a hit or miss thing and I have no idea as to why? When looking at the fuel line and vapor recovery tubing schematics way back when, it appeared there is a ball check far above the tank itself. I am still not certain the Insight’s vapor recovery charcoal canister is ever filled due to that schematic showing the fill line rising above the fill line itself but who knows. In any case, you may be using the FCD as your actual for where she runs out at but take her all the way. I think 1,600 + is easily in the cards on your attempt and I would hate to see you fall short because you did not take her to her maximum. Remember the 13.7 gallon fill was on top of some fuel still left in there. 14.0 is about her true max and use your FCD and calculate from that. 114 – 115 (mpgs) x 14 (gallons) = 1,596 - 1,610 miles. I only ran the Insight out once and it took just ½ a gallon to get her back up and running to the first gas station if that helps.

___Laurie, your HCH-I can actually go further because you have a 16.0 gallon total cap. Not when an Insight is taken to 150 - 180 mpg’s on the right course using a full blown Low – Mid speed P&G but you should be able to nail around 1,700 miles doing the same at 110. The HCH-I w/ a stick is good for a sustained 115 mpg’s (RJ saw a sustained 117 RT in his last year) but it will be a lot of work. You have the location and possibly even the rolling hill type roads but its the patience and determination that will be the hard part :(

___Good Luck

___Wayne
