Yes - even Toyota is hurting. --Ed

Tokyo - Toyota Motor Corp facing a deep slump in the U.S. auto market, is considering postponing the start production at a plant it is building in Mississippi until 2011 or later, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The plant was scheduled to begin building the Prius hybrid car in the second half of 2010.

Toyota, which shocked investors last week when it cut its operating profit forecast by 63 percent to a 13-year low, has set up an emergency committee to look at costs ranging from labour to R&D to improve short-term profitability, and delaying new factory launches was one of the options it said it was considering....http://www.reuters.com/article/etfNews/idUST27151720081114

Delaying on-site production would be a serious mistake. Toyota needs to continue to be forward facing and realize that they are investing in their own future here!

Maybe they are waiting to see if it's going to be a level playing field..

IF us automakers get a bail-out, then it's going to hard to compete against them.
Since American cars can be sold for lower prices.. (Gov subsidized)..

But, the bail-out may not happen in time to save GM and Toyota will go ahead
and start building..

Harsh reality of cash flow. Every option gets put on the table.

Might tt also may make more sense converting an existing Tundra, 4 runner, Highlander plant to make Priui there?

They're stacking up at our local dealer.

It looks like the used market for them is dropping too. Clean 2003s with 30,000 miles are going for $11,000.

I don't think people are buying anything.

If they stop in the middle of building this plant it will hurt their reputation quite a bit. Luckily this is not as large of a city as Austin.

There's been some updates in the financial press essentially saying that Toyota hasn't yet made a decision to delay. See for example:
