The third place Smart Fortwo ED was the real winner during the award presentation.

The highly coveted "Gold” and recently created “Green Steering Wheel" were awarded to both Audi and MB for their very latest vehicle offerings and environmental friendly technology.

The popular German Sunday newspaper, Bild am Sonntag, awards its annual “Golden Steering Wheel” to a vehicle judged best by a jury of experts. These experts evaluate the candidates for a number of minor and major attributes including seat comfort, interior space, handling, ease of repair and environmental friendliness.

In only its second year, the “Green Steering Wheel” is a green technology award. Bild am Sonntag invites its readers to vote online or by mail for the best eco-friendly automotive innovation. A team of environmental experts than assess the eco-ideas which received the largest numbers of readers' votes. This year’s jury of experts included Germany's Environment Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, the Chair of Germany's Green parliamentary group, Renate Künast, the President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, Matthias Wissmann, as well as senior representatives of German environmental protection associations and automobile clubs.

Audi

The “Golden Steering Wheel” has been awarded since 1975. This year, the yet to be released Audi Q5 was recognized as the best SUV even though it has yet to arrive in dealership showrooms.

The Audi Q5 won out over strong competition and, in the process, repeated the Audi A4’s success last year. The award for the Q5 is the 17th victory in 33 years for a vehicle bearing the four rings, making Audi the most successful competing brand.

Mercedes Benz

The readers of Bild am Sonntag and its jury of experts awarded MB the “Green Steering Wheel” for its diesel emission limiting, BlueTEC technology which according to the judges, has the greatest ecological potential of all the eco-friendly innovations currently found in the automotive sector.

The Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC emissions package consists of a number of coordinated measures to reduce overall emissions. Inside the engine, combustion control with high pressure multiple injections and an advanced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) minimizes untreated exhaust to the exhaust manifold while a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) ensure effective exhaust-gas after treatment. Finally, the nitrogen oxides are reduced to extremely low levels by a NOx storage catalytic converter and a special Selective Catalytic Reduction converter (SCR) with Urea Injection.

In the US, the R, ML and GL-Class SUVs are using the award-winning BlueTEC technology.

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, accepted this award at a presentation ceremony in Berlin. During the presentation, MB drove a Smart Fortwo EV onto the stage to emphasize its leading position in the development of environment-friendly technologies to provide individual mobility of the future.
