View Full Version : How do you get a meet started in your area
drimportracing 10-31-2008, 12:36 AM I haven't been able to find a meet in the NC area for hypermilers, ecofriendly drivers or even for hybrid owners for that matter.
Can we have a sticky thread in the Events and Gathering Forum where all members can check in or have a roll call into their prospective areas like NW, SW, NE, SE, MW, Central, HI, AK, PR and even CANADA, EUROPE, ASIA? Where ever there are members.
Maybe an individual thread for each region. If any member from that area knows of an event that is related to hypermiling they can post the particulars there and we could see about meeting up with others.
This way if I'm travelling in say Seattle, Washington I can go to that regions thread and check for events while I'm in town.
As it is now it is really hard to know where some of these events are by the threads title. This would make it simpler to identify fellow members in my region and more likely for us to actually attend or set up a meet.
Even events that are car related but not hypermile exclusive could be a place for meets, like in my area we have the Charlotte Auto Fair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with 2 car shows a year one in April and the other in September that draws 150,000+ people per event. That would be some serious www.cleanmpg.com exposure. Thats just one place out of 100's each year.
SE event with next years dates: http://www.charlotte-autofair.com/

In order to have a meeting I just posted asking if there was anyone locally. The first meeting was three of us and a guy's family. It expanded from there because we kept at it, kept holding meetings, kept pubbing it, and it's grown from there.
IIRC (although this is not a complete list), there's groups in Milwaukee, Houston, Chicago, Austin, Cincinnati, Dallas/Fort Worth... those I know for sure. There *may* be one on the Ohio/PA line, as well as one in the Baltimore area.
I do like your idea though and if I get the chance I'll assemble a list of the groups, who to contact, and so on.
98CRV 11-01-2008, 09:10 PM Just post an offer to meet, and wait for a few locals to reply. That's what we Balto-Wash folks did.
Kacey Green 11-01-2008, 09:47 PM I'd be glad to help out if you want to set something up. I'm sure we can get the space in Columbia, SC, and I can see if our (The Midlands Hybrid Club's) premiere sponsor, Midlands Honda is interested in helping out.
They've help send us to some of our events including:
The Richland County Neighborhood Improvement Program, where we spoke about hybrids.
Earth Fare, for the Earth Day celebrations
The Midlands Honda Grand Opening celebrations
The Hydrogen Roadshow Tour, where the FCX Clarity diverted to D.C. and we didn't get to see it.
MPGfest by CincyMPG
They are helping out in a small way with our hosting of the SC leg of the 48 state world record run.
Boston Man 11-02-2008, 09:47 AM I think CLEAN MPG should have a forum for regional areas. eg: North East, West coast, etc etc etc. Then we can start threads in the appropriate forum to get these meets going.
Kacey Green 11-02-2008, 11:22 AM It sounds useful, the easiest way to reach out to people is in large groups in-person. This might make getting everyone together much easier.
The flip side is the sub-forum could be ignored, or the folks who can put it in place might not have the time to do it.
I think this is a great idea and if anyone asks my opinion I'd say do it. Unless someone can persuade me otherwise, and no, because I said so is a perfectly valid reason.
I see this as a great way to build traffic and to help evangelize the common sense conservation of resources that is hypermiling.
Any meetings in the Sacramento area?
PookieSoup 11-02-2008, 02:50 PM Post a time and a date. Distribute. I created events on yelp.com and facebook.com. I decided to start a meet up because my friends wanted to learn how to hypermile.

We could but you'd have to talk to Wayne or Sean about it and since we already have 62 subforums by my last count more would cause some of us to get lost
Kacey Green 11-02-2008, 06:00 PM Well each region could be a sub forum of the community and gatherings forum (some better name would be necessary)
99metro 11-03-2008, 01:05 PM That would be cool to have meets. Doesn't have to be fancy or sponsored - just a bunch of folks with FE in mind. They all could learn from each other.

Somewhere in Northern Colorado...

When I get some computer time I'll assemble a list of the various Hypermiling groups, who to contact, and what cities they're based out of. I'll also make up a map if that helps.
99LeCouch 11-04-2008, 07:25 PM Columbia meet? Keep me informed, I'll gladly DWL out!
jstol3 11-13-2008, 04:38 PM Sub Subject: Has any one tried to offer our hypermiling skills as a way to raise money for a charity? I'm thinking that it would be great publicity for our cause and to raise money for a worthy cause. Something along the line of a pledge per mile over the cars stated range. Of course we would have to find an interested charity and then get pledges generated prior to the event. Does any one think that this idea has merit?
