Been researching 3 cylinder MT Metros. Can someone shed some light on the EPA web site numbers for various years. The "Geo" Metro was rated at 40 MPG combined in 1997. Chevrolete rebranded the car in 1998 and the reported MPG began to slip. It went from 40 MPG combined in 1998 to 28 MPG I believe in 2001. I didn't think the design changed any in that interval, so I'm mystified. Anyone have any info?

It's worse than that...

It '93 they had a combined EPA of 55mpg.

Think I NOW understand the 2001 number. Apparently Chevrolet dropped the 3 cylinder that year - go figure. Still, by 2000 Chevrolet had apparently managed to drop the combined MPG from 40 to 36. Great mystery!

The newer Geo Metro's (Chevy Metro's) went from a shoebox to nearly a compact car; the three cylinder was replaced with a four cylinder, more features were added, and IIRC adding OBD-II support reduced mileage, as well.

The slide also continued due to addition of creature comforts.

They added Power Steering, AC (standard), more noise dampening dynamat stuff, larger steel wheels (heavier), more glass, and the list goes on.

It was a combination of things, not just size of the motor.

Hi Jim:

In addition, it was 1984 when the first offsets or adjustments were applied to the city and highway tests lowering the Monroney's FE to "better" match the real world..
