REDMOND - They bought a house in Snohomish because it was affordable, but now they're considering selling and moving to Redmond. The reason: they believe it will be cheaper in the long run instead of commuting.
Cristina and Jeff Knecht say they know real estate is more expensive on the Eastside, but with gas prices on the rise, the daily drive to Microsoft is getting to be too much.
"There's no way we can afford that, we're going to be spending $400 to $500 a month to commute from Snohomish to Redmond," said Cristina.
She adds, "The price that we're paying to commute down every day will end up being the price we would have paid for a house down here."
Now with word that BP oil is closing their Alaskan Pipeline and experts are predicting another spike in gas prices by next week, the Knechts have seriously begun considering selling their home.
Cristina says they're also considering trading in their SUV for a new hybrid vehicle. Hybrid sales rose 26% in the first 6 months of 2006 and are expected to keep rising.
