Ok, ok, we get it. You want more pics, but you're looking for something a little more.... intriguing. So we'll serve this one up and see what you think.

Just one hint: You won't find one of these on the current Prius.

The first cup holder you can microwave your drinks?

This looks like a camera lens. Since the current prius has a backup camera I'm guessing this is a forward looking thermal infra red camera.

Would that mean it would have a HUD if it's got a infra red camera? That'd be cool as all get out.

What does the laser CC look like?

I would recognise that anywhere, it's a miniature star trek 'beam me up scotty' machine

Its a lens, but it doens't have to be a camera. Could be an LED lamp of some sort, but it doesn't match up with the headlamps seen in the full car images.

Optionally, Hal might open the pod bay doors.

I'm also guessing thermal infrared camera, looks just like the one sitting on my desk.

Ha.

It still has exterior rear view mirrors, so it's not a replacement for those.

I wonder why it has perforated metal for the enclosure?

I think it's the business end of a FLIR system. Very useful for target acquisition and tracking in adverse conditions. So the switch must be for the weapons bay?

the 07 prius and above had already backup camera in one of the packages so maybe its standard across all models?

It's a thermal infrared camera but to monitor interior temperature for the SOLAR POWERED HVAC system.

It's something interior, since the U-shaped trim piece is the same color as the "Open/Close" switch Wayne teased us with last week.

So then my guess is iris recognition, to replace the Smart Key...

Catgic, that is a most excellent guess!!

Hi All:

___I may as well throw my $0.015 into the ring.

___I agree that it appears to be “looking” or “projecting” forward but I think its an automated wiper rain sensor. At first I thought it may be an LED giving that calm glow to the cup holders and arm rest lid as the Accord and recent Aura was equipped. But it has such a clean lens I think it is a bit more sophisticated than a simple projected LED and thus my Rain sensor thoughts similar to how the MDX is equipped. When my wife gets home in a few hours, I am going to have a close look at the Acura’s rain sensor and see if it has a camera like lens in it as well?

___Good Luck

Given that the Prius is big on way-cool technology, I'm inclined to think that Catgic may be on to something here.

It looks like there's something in the bottom. It could just be lens glare from the flash, but that's not going to stop me from wild speculation!!! I say that it's a USB port, and you can hook it up to your computer and control your car via cron.

What is the object just above the rear-view mirror? could this be its location?
I was also thinking HUD, but the opening just didn't jive looking at the spy shot. it also wouldn't have large gaps for things to fall into.? would it?
On the priuschat site, they suggest a "Vehicle Display Apparatus" from a Recent (10/16/08) Patent submitted by (the patent crazy) Denso Corp.
makes sense to me.

Actualy, it looks more like a light sensor. Considering that yes, it matches a standard windshield 'edge' pattern in the reflection, it very well could just be a simple headlight automation sensor. Gets dark, lights on, gets bright, lights off.

But I'm not too familiar with the Prius, does it have that feature already?
