Just redesigning the dashboard on the current vehicles out there could save a bunch of gas. Make it like many of the hybrid dashboards.

Replace the analog sweeping speedometer with a huge digital speed readout to accunate the speed change.

Have a bar graph of the instant mpg.

If it's a hybrid, have prominent bar graphs of the battery charging/consumption.

In other words, a dashboard not unlike the Honda Insight - makes hypermiling into a video game. :cool:

Just as the Insight is designed to make the driver sensitive to speed changes, the typical SUV tends to make the driver insensitive to higher speeds. I'm not going to recommend getting rid of the noise deadening material, although noise makes you more aware of speed. Being higher above the road desensitivizes the perception of speed somewhat. A simple non-digital dashboard adds to the speed tune-out.

I totally agree - if we can go out and buy a Scanguage for $130, seems it would be much cheaper for the engineers to incorporate this into the standard instrumentation.

The next question is: Would the majority of the drivers pay any attention to a MPG display?

I've seen some drivers smoke with a cell phone on their shoulder... :(

Don & Delta Flyer;

Ain't gonna happen here in Williamson Cnty., Tn. ;) Here the people drive Suv's, Z71 Trucks, Etc. like they were the cost of a small compact car or suv. They could care less. As a co-worker told me not to long ago when I ask her this question. Say, why don't you trade off that Avalanche and get you a smaller vehicle that would be tons cheaper to operate and half the price of that Avalanche? She had already ran through $130.00 Dollars worth of gas in 4-Days. Gas then was right at $3.30 a gallon, 87 Octane. Answer back to me, Terry I'm not driving one of those little toy cars like you drive. I'm not going to get (Killed) just to say on gas. Your Crazy. That concluded the discussion. She constantly complains about not having any money and wonders why? Granted this is just one person, but believe me the majority of people here drive the really expensive vehicles and they are large in size. When fuel here was $3.30 a gallon for 87 Octane and I would be driving down the interstate at 65 MPH in the right lane. People in these same vehicles would pass me doing, (For-Real) 80-85 MPH and that tells me they could not be concerned about FE. They may talk it but their actions here locally don't show it.

I believe we probably all have a few examples of people using the "bigger is safer" logic.

One of my wife's friends used to own a Volvo, mainly because she is concerned with safety.
So she gets into an accident in the Volvo.
Car is totaled, she has back & neck pains for months afterwards. Goes to physical therapy & a chiropractor.
She starts looking for a replacement - decides on a Chevy Tahoe because it's big and sits high.

She says she feels safer now. I ask her about maneuverability, stopping distances, risk of a rollover. She doesn't even know why I'm asking these questions. It's just her, no kids and just a little dog to haul around.
In a big Tahoe.

I'm still working on her. When gas prices start increasing again, she may be ready to think about it.

Don,

That's exactly what I am talking about with the co-worker here. She traded in a Tahoe on this Avalanche. To each her own I guess.

I think some people would respond to dashboards that accentuate the fuel consumption. I'm also aware that a large part of the population just doesn't care. :mad: I'd go so far as to say some 20 something power truck drivers might even compete to anti-hypermile - i.e. see how much fuel they can waste. :rolleyes:

We may live in the 21st century, but a lot of people would like to pretend they don't have to use their heads. For instance, I'm at MSN Groups and people at those forums rant about how it's slow there even with a broadband conneciton, no search features or means to see new posts. But introduce them to a forum like this one and because it's different - IT'S ROCKET SCIENCE! :eek: It's the same primitive wrongheaded mentality of going from a Volvo to a Tahoe.

Tiger, it's not my habit, but that woman taunting you about the "toy car" would have probalby received a crude remark from me. I know I should not, but I'm fed up with so much of the American population telling themselves they need land yachts that did not exist 25 years ago. I remember when Cadilacs were considered huge in the 1970's

Sad, people that buy these things to keep up with the Jones, piling up the debt. If only there was a way the economic and enviormental damage was not inflicted on others I could care less.

Delta;

I considered the Source and just thought to myself. Is this person dealing with a Full Deck? Answer=NOT!!!

How does this saying go? {You can Lead a Horse to Water but you can't make him Drink}

That's the way I feel about some of these people I work with that, just have to drive these tanks around, and then *itch about not having any Money. Gee, I can't Figure that out? DUH!!! Some people there is just know hope in changing them or making their lives better. They have all the answers already and their lives are a living disaster/nightmare.

Tiger,

I had lunch with an ex-worker that resigned six months ago because he refused to agree on a four-week probationary period. Somehow he thinks spending four hours on personal business daily, being noisy, making off-color jokes is professional behavior. :rolleyes: He's still looking and is still mad "he got screwed".

Delta;

Are you sure we don't work at the same company? I thought you might just be down the Hall and I had not met you yet. :)

The systems adm. person was let go 3-weeks ago and for some of the very reasons you just mentioned. Mainly in this persons situation, it was "Attitude" with all of us on a daily basis. He did not change, so guess what? They did: ;)

I was upset the Civc with Navi didnt come with a trip computer like a Accord. I think this is a grave oversight on Hondas part. I guess most folks want a i-pod port or something. How Honda can spew all its green claims, be proud of its FE and not put a trip computer in atleast a Navi car is insane. So now the option is to get a scanguage and put that ugly thing in my nice Civic.

I'm not real familiar with the hybrid Civic, but I can't imagine it being without a trip odometer. Maybe I misunderstood the last post....

Hi Chuck:

___Oh how I would love to see an iFCD and aFCD’s in every car made. I think this is one area that the EPA should make a mandatory requirement in today’s automobiles. This country is and can be ultra-competitive when and where it wants to be and if we could place an Insight like gauge cluster package in front of the masses, you will see overall FE numbers move vastly higher and overall fuel consumption fall. Of course not all but like us, once you get more onboard to CleanMPG like techniques and tactics, those not pushing the envelope will be the ones looked down upon instead of the other way around as it is today :(

___An a and iFCD cannot cost more then $10.00 at mass produced OEM pricing. It is sad that this country has yet to wake up to the usefulness of Trip computers and FCD’s in their already feature packed but displays as we see today.

___Psy was speaking about the non-hybrid based 06 Civic w/ NAVI. For some unknown reason, Honda screwed those purchasers over by not including the NAVI based Accord’s TC w/ an i and aFCD built in to the NAVI unit itself. Truly sad given the HW, SW, and Bus are all there for that taking. Not more then $0.05/Civic to make the TC appear ...

___Good Luck

Hey Psy;

I have Stayed up (All-Night) thinking about what you just Posted about Honda not having .

Honda spent the Money on the EX Civic for the(Trip-Computer), on the "Disc Brakes & Manual Trans." :D

Hows it feel to get screwed tiger. You got a little fuel/trip/mpg meter and you had to buy a hybrid when it should have been in your Navi. In all Navi cars at a min. So no the little $10.99 read out you got dosent make up for the CVT or the 1940's drum brakes. OOOO and if Honda pulled there head out. IMA could go in any car in there line up. Even a EX with 5MT and rear disc brakes. :) Kinda makes you wonder if we are all auditioning for the role of the guys in Pulp Fiction with the gag balls in there mouths,,, dosent it.

psy,

I think it is Called (Sells). Don't give-em anything until you just have to. :(

Like the Instant FE Gauge or on the Hybrid, the Disc Brakes or the Sunroof/Moonroof. When the 05 HAH came out Honda said they did not install the (Sunroof/Moonroof) because of the "Extra Weight". Funny for 2006 the HAH has the "Sunroof/Moonroof". So all of a sudden Weight was not any longer a (Concern).

It would not surprise me that for 2007 the HCH II will have all this built into the Nav. Unit, like the HAH now.
