View Full Version : Two more commutes
tbaleno 08-03-2006, 09:04 PM Well, the last few days have been exceptional for a lot of us. Those of us that are sucking up the heat and not using A/Cs are putting up record or near record segments.
I notice that I'm close to a 700 mile tank. When I started this tank I didn't plan on trying for a 700 but with the tank sitting at 630 miles and 3 bars left on the fuel display I figured I would take my own advice and go for it.
I'm always telling people there is at least 50 miles in the tank when you get to no bars so I'm going to trust in my own advice.
My round trip to work is a total of 33 miles (about 16.5 each way.) So I figure two more commutes and I'll have a 700 mile tank. I might top off after this one and go for an 800.
Some day I have to get up there with lakedude, hot georgia and the others and I think the only way to do that is push myself into territory I don't see very often.

lakedude 08-03-2006, 09:15 PM Tom I've been to your fair city, in fact I was born in a burb. You are doing fantastic given the traffic you deal with in the windy city. I live in the middle of nowhere and work an odd shift with lighter traffic. If I lived in Chicago I'd be totally happy to see EPA at all.
tbaleno 08-04-2006, 10:29 AM Well, on the way in I saw my first low fuel warning and the Gauge showed only one bar. As I continued I got up to two bars and the low fuel light went off. I'm sitting at 653 right now. 3 more segments to go. I just have to keep telling myself that I know I have 1.5 gallons left and if I can keep a 55mpg average I will have no problem making it.
tbaleno 08-04-2006, 01:47 PM Drove to lunch today. Another 7 miles on the tank now up to 659.9 and 1 bar on the gauge again. Low fuel light illumniated again :( about 3/4 of a 1 gallon of gas needed to get to 700. I'm pretty sure I have that left ;)

You have it!!! Get the big 700. :woot:
tbaleno 08-04-2006, 07:19 PM 676 right now. last bar keeps coming and going.
1 1/2 segments will put me over the top. GULP.
I warned the wife to expect a call on monday evening when I run out of gas ;)
psyshack 08-04-2006, 08:21 PM You wont run out. 700 plus miles,,, i can see it!!!
tbaleno 08-04-2006, 08:27 PM Thats what I kept telling everyone when they would make an attempt.
I'm taking my own advice and going for it. I will NOT fill up before 700 miles unless I run out of gas (which I doubt I will)
Chuck 08-04-2006, 08:46 PM I've had the gas alert appear on my Insight just once in it's six years. I would bring a 5-gallon gas can if I was going to drive on empty. I must be chicken....
I will agree that if you can live without the A/C, great runs are possible....
tbaleno 08-04-2006, 08:50 PM LOL.
Do you have a bad experience related to running out of gas? I've run out before in previous cars and it seems that the amount below empty is a good amount.
Chuck 08-04-2006, 08:55 PM I did it growing up once, then a couple of times in the 1988 CRX HF. It was part fear and part relying on the mpg display that I don't burn down a complete tank in my Insight.
tbaleno 08-05-2006, 05:20 PM I got desperate today and in order to help my mpg I decided to get a hair cut. Hey, everything adds up right!?
I put on another 4.5 miles or so. ODO reading now stands at 680.5 or something. The last bar keeps flickering off and on ;) I think it is trying to tell me something but for the life of me I can't figure it out.
krousdb 08-05-2006, 06:22 PM Tom,
Strap on a set.:D
philmcneal 08-05-2006, 10:43 PM start fasing tom!!!
and turn off your stereo equipment... i'm sure that robs a mile or two!
Hi Guys:
___Tom knows how to do it … The question for Tom is, do you have what Dan posted to accomplish the task ;)
___Good Luck on Monday/Tuesday’s commute(s).

In our HCH's you can drive along ways once the light comes on for Low-Fuel. :p

tbaleno 08-06-2006, 11:27 PM How far did you drive and at what mpg when you ran out?
tbaleno 08-07-2006, 10:15 AM Latest update:
697.3 miles on the odometer. Car started with 1 bar on the fuel gauge. As soon as I started it the bar was gone. I drove my whole commute (16 miles) with it off. I'm just hoping the fuel doesn't get sucked up when I start it cold this after noon. I have a gas station about 3 miles away so I should just get 700 by the time I get to the station.
tarabell 08-07-2006, 10:28 AM 3 miles..bfd....you have it bagged!
tbaleno 08-07-2006, 07:50 PM Done.
The end result 700.8 miles. No goofy driving around until I made it. Thats exactly how far it was to the nearest station when I hit 700.
The FCD said 60.9 but the calculated was only 53. Some of the discrepancy could be the fact I used a different station and pump than I normaly do.
Fuel used 13.127.
